This, perhaps, is because of our awutant re porter having p retire from the field on the second day of the Fair and has not been able so be out since, and it was too big a thing for one reporter to un dertake to write up. In the poultry department a pair of bronsed turkeys, the finest pair, by far, on exhibition, by Willett & Dunn, was omitted, and there were white Leghorns by H. D. Wood & Bro. which attracted considerable attention; Plymouth rocks by C. M. Nelson; Wyandotte by Mrs H. R. Bryan; Peafowls by Col. J. N. Whiiford, and a fins Cochin oxk by Joe McSorley. Another curioeit; which attracted considerable attention was a small pair of pints send by Geo. T. Sanford of Greeae county. They measured fifty -six inches in tbe waist and were long in proportion. Tbey were too small for tbe man tbey were made for and were offered at the Fair ae a premium to the man who would come tbe nearest filling them. Tbey were not awarded to any body, Jbut a gentleman from near High lands only lacked a few inches of taking tbem. We suggest to Capt. Sanford to grow large enough to fill them and oome down to the next Fair; he would make a splendid exhibit for a side show. At tbe next Fair we intend to haye a reporter for every department and get rid of tbe trouble of making correc tions. Premiums. We have had several inquiries about when the premium awards will be pub lished. We can only answer that tbey will be published as soon as furnished. We don't know tbe committees of awards, or we would go to tbeohairman of eacb and get his report. Send in the reports and let the people know who got premiums. The Association baa the money on Land to pay all tbe premiums offered, but the people want to know who ot them. The oommiltee of awards will please send in the infor mation and let the people have it. Commitsiuners' Proceedings We publish elewhere the proceedings of tbe county commissioners at a meet ing held on the 15th. It seems from the reading of these proceedings that ex treasurer Kilburn is still trying to hold the fort. If we understand the matter, he is not eounty treasurer, be oiuse he fails!, in the judgment of the county commissioners, to offera good and sufflolent bond. Surely he will not undertake to bold the books of ths county treasurer, knowing that he is not the treasurer. Church Services Today. Methodist Church Rev. L. W. Craw ford, pastor. County Commissioners' Proceedings. The Board assembled at the court house on Wednesday, March 15, at 11 o'clock. Present: Jaa. A. Bryan, Thos. II. Maliison, 8. W. Latham and W. O. Brinson. M. W. Carman, Esq., one of the su pervisors of roads and bridges of No. 0 township, reported to the Board that the bridge across Bstohelor creek, on Washington road is in a very bad con dition, and recommended the imme diate repair of tbe same. The matter was referred to Gommiakionrr W. (J. Brinson with power to act. Isom Albritton, ool., of No. 7 town ship, was relieved from payment of poll tax charged against bim for tbe year 1887, bs being over fifty years old. Tbe committee appointed to examine the books and aooounts of the county treasurer, submitted to the Board tbe following report: To the Board of Commissioners of Cra ven coanty : Gentlemen In compliance with your resolution of March 0, instructing tbe committee appointed for that purpose to examine tbe books of tbe county treasu rer and report to your Board at an ad journed meeting to be held to-day all moneys received and which ought to haye been received by said treasurer from all sources, respectfully submit, that they have examined the books and tbe accounts of said treasurer and are unable to make the report as contem plated in your resolution. The treasu rer states to your committee that bis books do not show what money be ought to have received, and that he has no means of making up a correct statement of ths same, as ex-treasurer D. H. Kil burn has refused to account with him and to turn over to him the books of the offlos; that he is informed and believes that ex treasurer D.K. Kilburn has in his possession moneys belonging to Craven county; that he has made a demand on said ex-treasurer Kilburn to turn over to him all books, papers and other prop erty in bis hands belonging to tbe county, and that he positively refuses to do so; that an examination of said books in ths hands of said ax-treasurer Kilburn is necessary to furnish the in formation called for by your resolution, and that he cannot make a statement without iu All of which Is respectfully submitted. James A. Bbyan, Chairman of Oommiltee. March 15, 1888. Whereas, The committee to examine the books and accounts of ths treasurer hss reported that it is unable to dis charge its duty in consequence of ex- treasurer Kilburn refusing to turn over the books of the office. It Is therefore ordered that tbe chairman of the Board issue a subpoena aooordlng to law to compel the attendance of D. N. Kilburn before the Board on the first Mondsy in April- next, being tbe seoond dsy of said month, and to produce then and there all books and papers relating to the affairs of the county, especially the treasurer's offloe, for tbe purpose of ex amination. Partridge is. (Juuil In late years it has become ouile cum mon among us of this part of the South to call our plucky little game bird, "Bob While, a 711111, as he is almost without exception styled in the Nor thern States. Formerly he was known to us. as elsewhere in the South, as a partridge, and there is excellent author ity for saying that ho is properly a partridge. In an article entitle.! ' Hob White. the Game Bird of America, '' published soma years ago in what was then Scribner's Magazine, the author, Alfred M. Mayer, good authority on such' mat ters, ssys of Ibis bird : "In fact be is neither quail nor part ridge; but to our mind he seems more akin to the latter thao to the former of his European cousins. " Tbe article treats of tbe subject at considerable length, and It has been republished by the Century Company In a very interesting volume called "Snort with Rod and Gun.1' Tbe eminent ornithologist, Dr. Cones, classes Bob While among the part ridges and enumerates their dntin gufshing features: "Our partridges may be distinguished among American Uallinae," elo., and adds: "In habits they agree more or lees completely with the well known Bob White, and describee bow. Quite pertinently Mr. Mayer ears: ' "If, however, many of our friends shall persist as tbey certainly will in calling Bob White a quail, then tbey should oall a brood of these birds a bevy, while a covey should designate the brood, it tbey call bim a Virginia partridge."
