KditoB Joubnal: It is said that the best works were written by those who had but little or no practical experience in tbe matters upon which they wrote. The author of "Home Sweet Home" was said to be a wanderer and never haa a home. The most learned disquisi tions on agriculture are written by men who never followed a plow or bridled a mule. Tbe ablest work ever written giving rules for health and lo insure longevity is said to have been from the pen of one who died at thirty-five. I hese . anomalies encourage me to write upon the subject that 1 wish to; that of the duty of mothers, though my self not a mother. When 1 go through the streets of our city 1 shudder for the coming genera- lion of our race. At nearly any corner on a pleasant afternoon or morning a group of children may be seen, com posed of both sexes and of both races assembled in an indiscriminate gather ing for enjoyment and amusement. Now is the street a proper nursery for the tender plants of our home and fire side i Many of these children are of the tenderest age, while others sre more advanoed in years. Is the street a proper place for tbem Unrestrained by any influence but their own will and inclinations r Our old school master used to "set us a copy to write Modesty is a virtue that greatly adorneth a female. Often have w written it and often have we had cause to refer in our minds to the truthfulness of it and the sad truth of the reverse proposition. Now can a girl who romps in the street without any regard to the companions she ia with, grow up with any reasonable supply of this adorning virtue V Mothers who are permitting this thing are sowing to the winds and must not be surprised if they should reap the whirlwind. The boys thus growing up are not promising much attainment in that line, but for the girls one feels tbe deepest solicitude If any reader thinks my story over drawn let him or her venture to speak to one of these little fellow as he runs across their path. Ten to one they will receive a sneering recognition or the very elegant salutation, "hello." If not satisfied with that experiment pause a few minutes and see the ancios, listen to the language used to each otber, and I think they will agree with me that the raising of children in the street is a dangerous experiment. This is written under the impression that many of these mothers are ignorant of the whereabouts of their precious little ones, and this timely notice served upon tbem may lead to a remedy. As I said, I am not a mother, but I had a mother and one of blessed memory, and well do I remember. the care she exercised over my little sisters, brothers and my self. How she wpuld always accom pany us to the door when starting to school, imprinting the warm kiss and urging us to run on to school and not loiter by the way. But my imagina tion cannot grasp what she would have said or done bad she seen us romping ia the street in a miscellaneous assembly of children regardless of race or sex. My imagination fails because such oould never hsve occurred in that day of home discipline and government. As I may be suspected I will boldly sign myself As Old Maid.
