Justice K G. Hill has been engaged for a day pr two in the trial of I.. B. Humphrey and a man named Wiggins for an assault on Caesar Bectoa, col., near Dover, with intent to kill. It appears that Caesar was fired upon twice from ambush a little after sun do wn on the 20th of April and was wounded in the breast and had one finger shot off. He charged the de fendants with the crime. Cha-t. 11. Brown, E-q , of Kinston, and I'. H. I'elletier, Esq., of this city appeared for the defendants and W. E, Clarke. Esq., for the State. After exaruinatian of witnesses and argument by counsel, Wiggins was dis charged and Humphrey was bound over in tha sum of two hundred dollars for his appearance at the next term of our Superior Court. The election for town offlceis in our town was a quiet affair; no opposition lo lbs regular nominee, all true Demo crats, ami resulted in electing for Mayor C. II. Fowler, and for Commis sioners Dr. Parsons, Joo. B. tuick and A. 11. Whitoonib. In Bayboro there was some opposition by tbe "drys" who seem to want-to force their ideas whether or no, bnt the result was the election of tbe regular ticket. For Mayor ex Sheriff D. B. Booker; for Commissioners, Wm. E, Hooker, Church Miller and Joo. T. Cooper. To see their names will satisfy all what their poli tics are. On last Thursday, accompanied by Mrs. L . we paid a visit to our boy, II. W. Lane, at Smith's creek, or as the change has it, Oriental, for Messrs. Harrison & Belts who are running tbe best-appointed mill in tbe county both nigbt and day, cutting 50,000 feet of yellow pine lumber in every twenty four hours; and also a full stock of general merchandise for the con venience of that section.
