Tba Democ rata of North Carolina can not be too actlv in their county con vase. Should ws lose the Legislature, the law-making' power of th State, it wonld be a calamity far mor ruinous to us than th defeat of onr. National and Btate tioket combined. It would entail, on th 87 aegro enuntle of th East h incompetent and extravagant manaeement that recall the dark day of 1863 and 1870, It will ' not do to re mand thee countie into the hand of incompetent negroes and unscrupulous and highly prejudiced scauawags countie that contain one-third of the white population of th State, and pay more than $200,000 of Our annual tax. It ia with the people of a community what shall be the status of that com munity a regards ita connection with she outside world. Those comaiunitiee whoee individual interests ar more closely allied one with another are the moat progressive, and exert the strong eat interest for tbe general good . It is ell for all men to act in a manner that ill protect their individual interest as on individual interest may have to op pose the other in the cause of trade, but it ia in ay opinion that unanimity of feeling and concert of actio u of the very utmost neceseity for the life of any business community-when it comes to a queetion of our dealing with tbe out side world. The life of a huoian bring ia very short, and tbe life of a corpora lion U the combined lives of many gen rations of men VVetoduy ate living in the condition that our ancestor created for us, and our deeendaote will reap the harvest that e will necessari ly sow. There is a grave responsibility reeling upon the present generation, and we aa men with the detinue of our followers in a large nnasure in our hands should be caraful as to how we act. It is not the best plan to be over cautious always, and it i not veil to jump at conclusions. Tuko the matter as it stands. We have in our community much brain and energy as there is in any community of its population, ami to utilize it for the best intere-t if all ia what is necessary, and what we should strive to do. A meeting of tbe old and young men of this community to consider quettions of mutual and general interests is a move in the right direction for the simple reason that tbe impetuosity of youth can by contact be restrained by caution and reason, the reeult of age and experience, and we thereby can accomplish by arriving at the happy medium more satisfactory and permanent reeults for good by our combined labors. W J. Kinston Items. County Commissioners v ill do in ses sion, next week. From most every section of our coun ty crop reports have a cheerful ten dency. Business is thought to bo on the eaves of a revival. New cotton ie expocted in a few days. The fall term of Kinston College be gins next Monday. The prospects are bright for a full attendance. Sheriff Sutton took up three prisoners for the penitentiary at Raleigh Mon day two colored and one white. They go for one year each. Mr. Abe Oettinger, of Oettinger Bros, ha returned from the North. He pur chased an attractive stock of fall goods which are constantly arriving. Judge Merrimon made a fine impress ion on our people. Be is exceedingly jealous of the rights of persons and abhors the idea of depriving a man of his liberty without due course of law. Since the Goldsboro Lumber Company ha boycotted New Berne perhape it would be well to enlarge tbe sash and blind factory that once flourished here by adding more machinery and doing a larger range of work. Th street force is cutting down weed aad grass from the sidewalks and making them look much better. though we do not think it wiae to let thia green vegetation .remain wncre it i . .
