We copy the below paragraph from Golden Rule, a colored paper published at Goldeboro, which would seem that the colored race is beginning to think for themselves and are no longer willing tojbe dictated to by leaders: "Wake up, joung men, you need not be Democrats, but with a silent vote you can right your wrongs. Brown, a pauper, to said county. Upon application of Dr K W. Hughes, and upon recommendation of S. B. Street and W. F. Rouatree, late aaeeeeor of No. 8 township, it wss ordered that the valuation of the Mc Lean property, at the northeast corner of Craven and Pollock streets, in No. 8 township, for the year 1SS3, (now listed, one-half interest to O. 11. Ouion and Win. Hollister, executors, on the regu lar list, valued at $3,000, and the other one-balf interest on the delinquent list, valued at $3,000, and charged to W and E. H. Pickle) be reduced to $3,000. And ordered further that the double tax charged to W. and E. H. Pickle, tax list of No. 8 township for 1&S6, be remitted upon payment of a single lax. The Chair opposed reduction upon the ground that the property was worth more money, and that the reduction oold not be in proportion to the valua- ion of adjoining property. All county vouchers issued since une 1, 19:8, were made receivable in payment of all county current taxes for 1888. Ordered, That vouchers held by A. Edward Woodruff for rent of the Stanly building while used for a courthouse be received by the sheriff in payment of the county current taxes due by ibe heirs of E. R Stanly, deceased. It isjwell known that Havana in in a poor sanitary cunditioi. ; and peopled by aclaes that do not pay the proper attention to cleanliness, is of course the causes of this duease origi nating there, and remaining nearly all the entire year owing to the fact that no frost visits the iiland to kill the germs in winter. The United Btates should by all means purchase this island, not only for the reasons above stated, but for many others of importsac). which I have not time to mention noV.
