lish an 'oyster bill prepared with
care, with the assistance of our

men, and others, to be submitted

Capt. R L. Buckner, who has charge
of the work in progrees on the New
Berne and Beaufort canal, passed
through New Borne Friday en route to
Norfolk on a short visit to his family.
Before returning he will be at the Albe
marle and Chesapeake canal a little
while, where he has another force of
men employed. Ho is superintending
the work on both canals at the same
time. He informs us that the dredging
woik on the New Berne and Beaufort
canal has proceeded about half the
length of the canal.
Mrs. E. E Wollard.of La Grange,
after spending a few days at Thurman
visiting relatives, is visiting the family
of S. D. Pope, Esq , in this city.
Senator-elect T. E. Oilman, of Ons
low county, was in the city yesterday
on his way North on a business trip.
Mr. T. C. Bender, of Polloksuille, is
in tho city- He goes from here to the
Northern markets to purchase bis fall

On the train last night returning to
Morohead was Mr. J. T. Smith, of
Lexington, Ky., who has been spend

sale druggists, has returned from a
successful business trip in the western

as Optimus Ointment. He reports good
sales in every town visited.
Mr. John Gatlin, living on Swift
Crock, called iu to renew his subscrip
tion to the Weekly Journal Friday,
and in conversation he informed us that
ho had never raised cotton in his life,
but gave his attention to grain, peas,
vegetables, fruits, etc. He is one of
those farmers that believes in "pay as
you go."
Mansger Young, of the Western
Union Telegraph Company at Raleigh,
has been iu the city for several days,
directing repairs on the cable at the
railroad bridge.

Early Friday morning Mr. Samuel
W. Willis unlooked his front door so
that his servant could get in and went
back up stairs. Directly after this,
Messrs. J. J. Tolson and Henry Taylor,
who live opposite, noticed a negro man
with a shawl over his shoulders, peep
ing in the rooms. He went in and soon
came out with a bundle under his arm
wrapped up in the shawl. Mr. Tolson
had seen enough to arouse his su3
pioions and he immediately crossed the
street and rang Mr. Willis's bell. Tho
negro then, commenoed running and
Mr. Taylor pursued him. He dropped
the bundle, which proved to be Mr
Willis' clock, near Mr. G. E. Nelson's

MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE
Of Mr. Frank L. Bond From His Home
in Tarboro, N. C.

Mr. Frank L. Bond, a well to-do citi
zen oi Tarboro, and about seventy
years old, strangely disappeared
yesterday morning. Some time before
day he got out of bed in his night
clothes and left the bouse. No one
took speoial notice of the matter until
hia long absence from the house caused
excitement in his family, and a search
we made immediately, but ho was not
found. A reward has been offered for
his body dead or alive. It is thought
that he is drowned in the Tar
river. Mental aberration is supposed
to be the oause of his Btrange aotion.

Baltimore, Md., August 27. Tho
Manufacturers' Record will publish this
week letters from bankers in all parts
of the South, which tell of tho bright
prospects in that section. Tho largest
ootton crop ever produced u predicted,
and the farmers are less in debt than at
any time since the war.
In its reviews of the letters received
the Manufacturers' Record says: 1 For
fivo years the ootton crop rum been
steadily increasing, and each year has
shown a gain over tho preceding one
a record which no other five year poriod
can exhibit."
In 1886-'87 the cron was 6.505.0C0
bales; in 18S7-'88 it was 7.048,833; in
1888-'69 6,960,000 bales, but the numbor
of pounds was greater than in tho pre
ceding year. Ja 1889-'90 it was about
7,250,000 bales or ovar, and the indica
tions point to at least 7.500,000 to
8,000,000 bales this year. Notwith
standing the steady increase in produc
tion the price has advanced from year
to year on account of the fact that the
world's consumption is fast outgrowing
the production
The total farm value of tho last four
crops, includiog cotton seed, was about
$1,500,008,000, and this year's crop
unless some unforeseen disaster should
befall it, will reach nearly 8500,000,000
in value, including tbe value of tbe
seed which was a waste product a few
year's ago. Thus in five years the

Rapid Business Transactions
We find in the Washington Gazette
the following complimentary notice of
Mr. J. T. Winfield, one of New Berne's
active bnsinesa men. Mr. Winfield is
propiietor of one of our shingle yards,
other ducks, several coops of chiokens,
Plymouth Rook, white Leghorn, game,
etc., and a nice assortment of fruits.
He had a watermelon that weighed 57
and a cantaloupe that weighed 85
pounds, dried apples, cherries, huckle
berries, blackberries, etc; tomatoes
put up live different ways, tomato and
watermelon wine, and several varieties
each of field peas, sweet and Irish po
tatoes, wheat, oats and other field crops
too numerous to mention. His was the
largest single exhibit made.
The Fair has been a suocess. The at
tendance good, the exhibits fine, fall
and varied. Ic closed with addresses
by a number of speakers.

county. He was but a boy when his
lather moved with his family to
Georgia about thirty-five years age. He
grew to manhood and married there,
and at the time of his death was
prosperous farmer. He has numerous
relatives on the opposite side of Neuse
river. Knowing that a fatal disease
had fastened upon him he came out
and paid them a farewell visit last
month. He was buried with Masonic
honors.
