Nothing 18 more essential to sue cess in life ihan self reliance, the very essence of manhood. It is The school boy who has no con fidence in himself, but goes for assistance the moment a difficult problem is presented can never be eome a scholar. The city that puts forth no effort of its own, but waits for distant communities to come and lay their treasures in its lap, can never become a commercial emporium. . Admitting that self reliance is necessary to success in all avoca tions and among all people, it is pre eminently true that the South ' has been (brown back upon her own resources and her sons made the arbiters of their own fortunes. The 'Federal Government sees fit to oppress labor everywhere, but nowhere is oppression so grievous ai8 at the South. Not content with aa attempt to humiliate her by de fying to her equality in the Union iiot satisfied with driving her repre sentatives from the halls ol Con gress and giving their seats to aliens who are hostile to her rights, she is compelled to furnish the means for defraying the expenses of the Administration by which she is oppressed. No man can de ny that agriculture is more heavily taxed, by present laws, than any other industrial pursuit, and it is established beyond controversy that the department of agriculture peculiar to the South la especially ..... burdened. . , ' i - What is to be done to meet this ;. condition of affairs! In order to bring the work of the Experiment Station more directly oeiore mo iarmers or tbe various localities of rhe State and. to secure the benefits resulting from expert ments on various soils, it has been decided to establish sub-stations in about eight or nine representative localities. These points will be three in the section west of Ilalelgh, ana inree in tbe central section west of Kaleigh, and two in the mountainous section. These sub stations will work in connection with the Central Station at Ral eigh in conducting field tests with fertilizers, m testing varieties of gra8ses,aforage crops, fruits, vege tables, etc., in trying improved implements, jiew agricultural metb ods, and in the general sense to try experiments in agriculture. Necec sanly tbe beginning will be small, and it is expected that it will be sometime before results cau be pointed to, but success is bound to be reached sooner or later. In the meantime every one should be patient, and be ready to cooperate in the work and give it a helping hand, to take interest in what is being none and watch the work as it progresses. The bulletius of the btation will contain f ull reports of operation at the various snb stations. H. B. Uattle. la Behalf of Ireland.
