THE ELECTION. The time is short and it becomes evert North Carolinian to exert himself to the utmost to secure the success of the Democratic party. We confess that it is with very great reluctance that we abandon the hope of seeing a solid Demo cratic delegation represents g Nor th Carolina in the 52d Congress. The condition of affairs in the second district renders it impossible for North Carolina to present a solid front to the enemy in the next Congress. This humiliating condition Bhould stimulant to greater efforts to con ' Hniu on A maintain Tiamnprarip. Carolina. This district cut off from participation in the repre. intative branch of the National legislature, it would be ter rible if, from like causes, North Carolina loses her proud position in the U.S. Senate. If through sapineness or disaffection we lose the Legislature the defeat of Vance follows inevitably, and with it a long train of evils too horrible to contemplate. Is it : possible to conjecture a Worse condition of affairs than will be onrs if the Democracy fail of success in North Carolina at the next election 1 A "Rannhlinan TT. S. Rpn.ltor ikott or some other of the clan of ' dispoilers, in the seat now filled , by Vance; a Republican judiciary, ' violating the Constitution as inter preted by onr fathers, ana ae ' daring laws null and void that : have been enacted for the protec : Hon of the minority, the peace of ; onniatv '', fho rnnA ftf f.riA ftnm- 4 mon wealth; a condition 01 unrest, - thai 'will check the incoming tide " of prosperity, stop " the influx of capital and erect barriers to farther material ' development that cannot be overcome. These are some of the1 results that will follow Eepubli- : ''mh anfiArfoa in "Worth Carolina. , ' What : do i gentlemen mean who refase to register ! what do canal dates mean who refase to attend appointments and ; speak the people i If the candidates are, afraid, ashamed or an able to atand up for the rights of the people in the presence of their friends, how can they do it in the presence of the enemy f If a man is tongue tied at home hew can he talk abroad f This is no time, and North Caro lina is no' place, to show the force of inertia or the inate conquering power of sound principles. This is a day of action. A candidate to succeed mast be a "hastier." The time is passed, if it ever was, when the people will take a Gin. cinnatuB from his plow, and "crown him lord of all." "The workman is worthy of bis meat" and only the workman. Io some counties the legislative candidates are making no canvass at all. It seems that tbey are ambitions for the glory of defeat; solicitous of the honor of beine forward in standing back. This will never do! Action, action, action ; constant, vigorous, resolute action, is the demand of the hoar. A CARD. In an issue of the New Berne Journal a few weeks ago there appeared an item in regard to the packing of the Democratic primary meetings ol I'amuco county, signed by J. M. Reel. The readiug public generally believed it to be my brother, but not so. It was my son, a youth about 19 years old. 1 am sorry tnac it occurred, ana assure the public that it was done without my knowledge, consent or ap proval. It has been reported by some that the said item will dam ago my business, as it is said that it was an attack upon the Farmers' Alliance. Isow the Farmers' Al nance in this community have at all times since their organization shown a friendly feeling towards me and my business, and I can assure them that I wish tbem much success in their grand crusade against all trusts and combines; and I cannot believe that they will be so foolish as to let anything a silly boy may say in regard to policies interfere with our friend' ship or business. llespectfully, J. B. Reel. The Confession of Faith Revision. Pittsburg, Oct. 14 The Re vision Committee of the Presby terian (Jhurcu will adjourn finally tonight to meet at Washington in February. The revision of chapter 111 on fore-ordination was finally tiaished yesterday, and though it is not ready for public inspection, Chairman Roberts vouchsafes the lniormaiion tnat tnere were some very radical changes made. The tenth chapter referring to the fina disposition of infants and idiots is under consideration today. Death of a Cousin of Jefferson Davlf. Chattanooga, Tenn., Oct. II. Gen. The Negroes In the Cenaaa. It is more and more apparent that the census will destroy all the fine spun theories as to the im mense increase of the negroes. There have been some foolish theorisers in the Norh-who have published some foolish specula tions in which it was attempted to show that the stupendous growth of the negroes would in a few de cades put them in the majority in the South. But the census of 1890, taken by Radicals, is said not to authorize such vagaries, but to the contrary shows that the white increase is greate than the negro increase. The Mobile Reg ister says- "Not a single black belt county has held the natural increase of its negro population, and four have lost in the increase and more besides. The gain in the negro population of the State daring ten years is small, and the whites have gained so largely as to ensure white suspremacy for all time to come." r Possibly some one or two States may show a greater ratio of in crease of the blacks than of the whites, but that is owing to immi igration and not to births. ? We caonnot speak definitely, bat we have - no , donbt that the census will reveal -: the , fact of a greater increase in North Carolina ofthe whites 'than the blacks. It is well known that without excep tion ia all communities where there is a system of health reports and burial certificates, that the ' death rate is very much greater among the blacks than the whites.
