In a lawsuit over a Texas pony, in Marshall county, Alabama, between W. B. Gross and A. (. Chuiiibless, the jury brought in a verdict for defendant, Cham- bless. The jury threw ' heads or tails" or used a similar plan by which to decide the case, ami the judge set aside the ver dict nnd the case will come up at the next term of the court. TLe costs in the case already amount to about 700. The pony was worth about $25. We have conversed with Postmaster W. E. Clarke iu reference to the change by which the two men who act in the ca pacity of railway mail clerks on the A. & N. C. R. R. cleiksare the help on another route making it so that they run twelve days at a time without interruption. Mr. Clarke decidedly expresses the opinion that no Than can stand the strain. The work required has got to be performed very rapidly and yet accurately. The mail matter has more than doubled and if any change is'made it ought to be made in the direction of giving additional assis tance Instead ol imposing additional duties. Track Quotation. The following truck quotation was re ceived by telegraph last night from Masara, , Palmer & Rivenburg of New York: ' Strawberriea, 15 , to. 15; asparagus $3 to $4; cabbage, $1.80 1 $3.00 pea i-Edenton 1.25 , . to H.C5;-otlier N. Win i.ow, Lfeut, Com. Improvements Rapidly Coming. The hydrants for the water works ar rived yesterday. The steamer New Berue of the N. N. & W. line was the one that brought them in. Mr. A. E. Boyer, of Fostoria, Ohio, ar rived to join his brother Mr. T. J. Boyer, who has been here si short time. They are the gentlemen who are to do the bor ing for the wells tor the water works. i'hey w ill begin the preliminary work of erecting a derrick today the work of bnriiig will follow us quick as certain material on the way arrives. The wells will be six inches in diameter; the first one will be over three hundred feet deep. Several others will follow, possibly over half a dozen. It will take only about one more day's work to finish the work on the founda tion for the stand pipe. The work on the foundation for the buildings will quickly follow. The works is moving on well and it will not hi long before New Berne will be well fixed on water works. A sewerage system has also been constructed and in a very short time we will have another railroad it is almost completed now. These nndj inany improvements in the city prove beyond doubt that New Berue is on the high road to a bright and pros perous future. Mathematical Training. It has been our pleasure several times lately to visit the New Berne Collegiate IustUute. While the pupils show pro ficiency in all tunes of study we are specially impressed with the good re sults from the mathematical training. We have seen the pupils show their mas tery of practical and complicated prob lem and yet as much skill as they showed at working examples on the black board, their quickness in mental arithmetic was more surprising still. Prof. Adams would give out questions prepared on the spur of the moment in volving from three to four calculations in all four divisions of arithmetic and by tho time he would finish speaking tho answer would be ready. Such tests show that under the meth ods in vogue at this school not only do the pupils assimilate their lessons but that their minds are also quickened into brisk activity. The results ot the thought t ii I teachers at this school are exceedingly hard to equal. Painful Accident at Kinston, Mr. Carl Pridgen, son of Mr. J. A. Pridgen of Kinston, received a serious injury Monday from the accidental dis charge of h;s gun.. He was standing, leaning upon the muzzle, throwing food to his dog. The latter in jumping for the food brought one of his feet down upon the Lammcr which fired the gun. The entire load of large shot passed through the left arm, coining out on the top of the shoulder. The shoulder and collar bone were fractured and the muscle of tho arm al most completely destroyed. Dr. Hyatt and Tull are in attendance and this condition at last accounts was as comfortable as could be expected. Coming and (jolng. Dr. F. Duffy left yesterday morning for Raleigh io attend the State Medical So ciety. Missrs. F. Ulrich, J. II. Hackburn and II. J. Loick left forTarboro as dele gates to attend the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons and the Grand Com mandery of Knights Templar. Mr. P. II. Pelleticr left for Raleigh to attend the Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows. M''. Hill Humphrey went up toTarboro on a business trip. D. F.W.Hughes retu-ncd last night Iron i Italcigh where he has been atten-. ling the meeting of the State Medical Society. Vr. A.M.Baker ol Danville, ar.ved last night to spend a tew days in the city. Honors to a North Carolinian. Dr. William F. Lewis, son of Dr. R. H. Lewis, of Kinston, who has recently graduated in medicine in the University of Maiyland, has just passed the examin ation before the Army Board in New York and now ranks as Assistant Burgeon in the army. He is home awaiting orders. Dr. W. F. Lewis was one of three only that passed the board. News and Ob server.
