We arc told that the delay of the steamer Trent at Arlington tarru with the picnic was not caused by her being aground as was generally supposed; but was on account of the wiiKls blowing so hard directly against her J that she could not have backed out from the wharf against the wind and to have turned around would have made her got aground so there was notliihg to do but wait. From Rev. J. R. Sawyer wo learn that on Monday night the 23d iust., Mrs. Wui. Brinkley, a widow lady living in the suburbs of Miuitto had her barn and con tents burned by an incendiary fire. She lost her corn, peas, hay, &c, farming implements, carts, and two buggies. Four hogs were burned alive. The loss amounted to about $1,000. There was some insurance. Noticing that quite large onions are being shipped off now we took the trouble ot taking down the number of onions In eight crates from Mr. W. II. Bray't farm just as they were in a row for shipment having been counted and the number contained in each crate marked on it rendered this an easy task. We found that the whole eight barrel crates, just at they came contained only 1344 onions an average of 155 to the crate. Only one crate contained as many as 160 and some had as low as ISO. v For crates taken at random tins is good showing. ; . Best Bread In the City. -Large loaves delivered at It, cents. Uoml Money in Cabbages. Messrs. Hackburn & Villett sent off 620 crates of cabbage Friday. This shipment made over ten thousand bar rels they have sent "off this year from the seventy acres they planted and they have a few thousand barrels more to send. Even this late in the season the cabbages arc netting thcui throughout 1.17 per crate for all they can send very satis factory returns tor them. Mr. J. R. Cromwell informs us that he has shipped 3010 barrel-crates from 18 acres an average of about 175 barrels to the acre. The cabbages now going oft arc very pretty, good size and solid heads, as fine as ever lelt here. The successive plantings ol winter and spring cabbages have been going off for several mouths. It will be but a little while now until the last of the crop will be marketed, but one crop laps right over into another. Cabbages and onions are not yet over but beans and potatoes are going forward. The potato shipping season is fairly upon us. The first shipment of conse quence was Friday, 500 barrels by the steamer John W. Garrett, the next day the steamer Neuse had 2,000 barrels of potatoes, (besides 1,000 crates each of cabbages and beans) and quite a large proportion of the seven cars of truck car ried by the A. & N. C. R. R. into Golds boro was potatoes. The next day the railroad had a train of ten cars with an increase in the packages of potatoes and the steamer shipments were full. The closing excercises of Salem Female Academy commencd Friday evening with a inual vocal concert There was a large crowd. The senior class in new Oxford caps was a charming sight.
