In accordance with a recent petition from Messrs. Blades Bros., Capt. Abe Willis, John R. McCabe, and others the United States War Department on the 26th, lilt., issued a notice of hearing to the A. & N. C. It. R. authorities say ing : "Whereas, the Secretary of War has jrood reason to believe that the bridge over the Atlantic & North Carolina rail road over Trent river at New Berne, N. C, is nn unreasonable obstruction to the Iree navigation of Trent river on account of the facts that tl e bridge is too low to pass under it, that its draw is too narrow, is at the edge of the channel and its axis is at an angle of about 4t( 1-2 degrees with the current and with the direcliou of the channel : 'It is proposed to require the following changes to be made in said bridge by the first day ol' January, 1894, to-wit : To place a draw in the bridgo in the second span to the South of the present draw, the laces of the piers of the new draw to be 45 feet a part in the clear measured at right angles to their direc liou, and their direction to make an an gle of 40 degrees, 30 minutes, with the axis of the bridge measuring from the biidge north of the draw towards the east or from the bridge south of the draw towards the west, suitable fender piles to be placed in the customary man ner at each end of the new drawer piers to facilitate the approach and entrance to the draw by vessels and rails in the very angle direction of the wind and cur rent. The railroud authorities were given an opportunity to be heard in the matter yesterday before Major W. S. Stanton, ol llie Corps of Engineers, U. 8. A. ot the United States Engineers office in this city. Mr. O. II. Guion was present to represent tho coinplainants, and Col. J. D. Whit ford in the capacity agent and Presi dent Chadwick also was present to repre sent the railroad. Col. J. D.Whittord presented an affida vit setting lorth the defendants as uot ready to present their points as they wished and the matter was postponed to the 1st day of August for the hearing, and in tile meantime it is required that a copy of the affidavit to be tiled by the railroad are to be served on O. II. Guion, attorney for the plaintiffs within such time previous to the 1st day of August as will give him an opportunity of an swering at the same meeting on the 1st day of August. , All the papers will be laid before the Secretary of War for his decision. A Nepro Desperado Caught. George Stewart, generally known by the nick-name of "Shorty," a desperate negro for whom warrants have been out incc January, was arrested soon after lay yesterday morning tear the five points as he was emerging from the house where he had spent the night. Having knowledge of his being in that vicinity several policemen had secreted themselves near and were ready for him as he came out. Instead of surrendering be drew a pistol and under cover of left the street and w ent through Mrs filling's. As he was passing into a room at the rear of the store one of the officers seeing the necessity for him shot him with a load of small shot about the shoul der. There was a loaded gun Bnd pistol belonging to Mr. Wallace Rose in the room within the negro's reach but not withstanding this he was soon taken. There were four warrants out for his arrest, three State and one city. They were foi house-breaking, resisting an offi cer, carrying concealed weapons and fir ing a pistol off in the city limits. Mayor Ellis acting as Justice ol the Peace tried hun on the charge of resisting an officer and bound him over to Super ior court in the sum of $200 which ol course he cannot give, and he is also held awaiting examination on the other charges. This is not the first timo the officers have seen him since the warrants have been out for him, but heretofore he has succeeded in his defiant course and made good his escape on each occasion. He came here with the hands of tin new railroad but has lately not been settled to any one thing or place. He claims to have come from Pennsylvania. Gen. John fi. Gordonfhas, at the solid tation of many prominent men in New York, consented to deliver a lecture founded on the closing days of the Con federacy and his personal estimate of the two great Generals, Grant and Lee. The date of the lecture will be announced later. The Chatham Record says: "On the 12th of May a mad dog bit some cattle and heirs belonging to Messrs. J. J. White, D. T. White and M. F. White, of Bear creek township, and last week three of the cattle went mad and had to be killed. The dog belonged to Mrs. Robi son, of Siler City, and was shot by Mr. U.Y.White. The reference just one time to the cargo hay just having been received by Mr. 0. B. Hill quickly brought a letter of in quiry for three tons ot it from a gentle wan i n Goldsboro '. who saw the notice. Mr. Hill carries standing advertisement with the Journal, but a special mention at special times do not cost much addi tional and help, along materially and business locals cqst but little. i; ''..,'"'"' LlatTonrTaxe. -..
