The Beer Stand Gets in its Work An affray occurred yesterday in the beer tent in front of the Fair grounds between Prof. Steele, aeronaut, and Mr. J. 8. Garrett who sells in the tent, nnd the former was severely injured about the face and head. Not so bad however as to interfere with the ascension still to come. Once before this the sale of intoxica ting drinks was allowed on city property near tho Fair. Public opinion is against permitting them to be sold either near these grounds , or on property belonging to the city anywhere, and rightfully so. Slover-Whitford. Dr. Geo. 8. Slover and Miss Bessie Whitford were quietly married at the residence of the bride's father, Col. John D. Whitford, in this city, Wednesday, August 16th at 8 a. ni. Rev. Rufus Ford officiating. No cards. After the ceremony they left to spend six or eight weeks at High Point and a tonr among the mountains of our State. Dr. Slover is one of New Berne's large and successful hardware merchants. His bride is one of our most amiable and lovable young ladies. The, esteem in 'which they are held was plainly mani fested by the unusually largo nura ber of very handsome and elegant presents of which they were the recipients, r Raleigh Races August 23 and 24. . A largo number of entries have been made for these races and from the class of horses entered it 's expected there will be witnessed sncb fast time at the com ing meeting as has sever been seen before in North Carolirts. f- . The race track, at tho fair grounds is completed and is now without exception tbe finest one in the south. " . -c In addition, to the races there will be an exhibition: of the beautiful ten months old filly with her boy. trainer, which wilt interest and amase both young and old. They will be gala days for the city folks and surrounding country nd a large number ' of people are expected from a'distancij . v. - ' ; -' ' ; . THE COLORED FAIR Increased Attendance The Raring Further Mention of Exhibits. The attendance at the colored Fair yes terday w as considerably in excess of any pieviousday by both white and colored. Some of our older citizens who knew him long and well, speak of him as the most hi getiious man ol his race they ever met. What the Facts Are A reading of the introductory remarks of President White of the colored fair will show some severe strictures. On inquiry we get from Mayor Ellis the following facts: The cemetery committee rents the un used and unfenced portion of the cemetery as they sec fit. Spaces have been rented heretofore on it, and the pro prietor of the business in a tent on one of tho spaces in which drinks are sold has license to sell only beer, soda water, etc. In reference to licences it is true that no tax has been collected heretofore from those inside the grounds, either at the white or colored Fairs. There has been no ruling along this liue the collection ot the license was simply omitted, but early this year it was decided not to continue the practice and directly after the Inst exhibition of the white Fair those in charge were notified that the collection of the city taxes from those liable to pay it would not be passed by again. Both Fairs arc treated alike and notice was served on the white Fair first. A fact which shows the desire of the municipal government to promote the interest of the Fair now being held is that the entire lighting op of the Fair is done for it at the city's expense. Kekoe-O'Xeal. Mr. C. M. Khoe, the handsome and well-liked purser of the steamer Neuse was married last night at 9 o'clock to Miss Etta O'Neal, one of the prettiest young ladies of the city, at tho residence of tbe bride's grandmother, Mrs. Rebecca Will's, Father P. F. Quinn officiating. An enjoyable reception was held im mediately after at the1 home of Mr. Kchoe. Many choice presents graced the occasion and attested the good wishes of friends.
