THE STATE BOARD Of HEALTH Some new members on the State -Board of Health are Dr. Edward J J j Wood of Wilmington, Dr. A. A. Kent '' " of Lenoir and Dr. Cyrus Thompson -j of Jacksonville. Dr. Wood has won V ..a good deal of fame by rvaion of hs J i -researches in connection wilh one of . ,:the new-fanwl .-d disc: pellagra we '.'"sbe1ieve.it is and Dr. Thompson is well known in this' section .n being deeply interested in the public health M Well as thoroughly capable to give expert advice ns to the best means of t preventing disease. t)r. Kent is not so well known in this part of the State, " but he id probably a man of the same 4yp oi Drs Wood and Thompson. It U very important to the public who constitute the State Board of r Health - Hence we , arc calling at irntion to the' live and progressive pliyslcians who have" been placed on die board in the place of othen who Ji.ive resigned or' whose . terms have rxpirtd. The members of this board are the conser vators of the life and health of the peo pie and it is difficult to conceive 'of more important public duties than theirs. MANY "WELL-OFF" PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY. Forty three million dollars worth of precious stones were imported into this country through the New York custom house in eleven ponths and the figures are certainly calculated to in dicate that there is a large percentage of the people with whom the problem of getting enough to eat and clothes to cover their nakedness is not a press ing one. The fact that the American people have so much money for the adornment of themselves and of those they love shows that there is a great multitude of what, might be called good livers. To a great extent, too, their abilitto buy and use or buy and eive awav this ereat auantitv of eems is due to surjerior industry and appli cation." The reward of financial in dependence comes to those who shuck their coats, get busy and stay busy. Those who lag and who hunt for the soft snaps never get on easy street. NEW AUTOMOBILE LAW. Some of the Principal Points In State Rules Now In Effect. Some of the principal points of the new automobile law are: All automobile owners must have the machines registered by the last day of . .June and any who have not register by that time will be vio lating ihc law to use them the first day ofjlily or thereafter. The 'Speed limit is ten miles an hour in business sections oj towns and cities, fifteen Hi residence section, and twenty five in' country districts, though it must al'all times be "reasonable and proper-n connection with particular circumstances, and any incorporated towns or cities have the right to make the speed limit less than stipulated, but can not allow it to be more. The tax is five dollars for 25 horse power cars, $7.50 for forty horsepower, and ten dollars for those over forty horsepower. Kighty per cent of the revenue from this tax goes to the coun ties which pay it and to be used for ,1 iwruiuL I THE ROAD TO WH? No person under sixteen years of age is allowed to drive a car anywhere in the State. The car must have on t,he roar a conspicuous sign furnished by the Secretary of State displaying the number of the car so that it may be plainly visible for fifty feet day or night, and at night a red light must be so placed as to shine on this number which; must at all times be kept clean. Other provisions provide for enforce ment of the law and for passing to the right and other directions as to gen eral safety under all circumstances. It is made the duty of all police officers, constables, etc., to enforce the law, and if strictly enforced it will injure no one who is riding for real pleasure or for business, but only those who are using the public highways without any re gard to the life and pleasure and busi ness of others. For a great many years doctors pro nounced it a local disease and pre scribed local remedies, and by con stantly failing to cure with local treat ment, pronounced it incurable.
