On Way To Completion The University of North Ca rolina may be the first state university in America to open its doors, back in 1795, but ten years before that The General Assembly chartered historic Grove Academy in Kenansville, a nr#?narafnrv arhool. During lis long ana useiui career It graduated such fa mous North Carolinians as Vice President William Rufus King. Senator Fernlfold Simmons and William Rand Kenan, Sr., whose family have been benefactors of the University for many J -? During the mld-nlneteenth century Dr. James Sprunt, a Presbyterian minister from Scotland, was headmaster of the academy and later a re lated Institution for girls was established and named In his honor. With the advent of pub lic high schools during the ear ly years of this century the old Institution closed Its doors. But Duplin people have now revived the school and named It James Sprunt Institute In Its honor. It Is a unit In North Ca rolina's growing Community College Svstem. The building of the James Sprunt Institute was paid for Dy tne citizens or uupimcouiuy wnicn is unique as not any state or federal funds were used In Its construction. The Institute has been ope rating from temporary quar ters for the past few years. During the year just ended It gave Instruction to over thir teen hundred students. Full time students expected for the fall quarter will be In excess of 450. They will be able to get a college degree in accounting, executive secretarial, business administration and commercial art design beginning this fall. These positions offer young ' men Interested In Immigration law enforcement an opportunity to begin a career In such work with on-the-job training forpo s It Ions of greater responsibili ty. No experience is required for these positions. To qualify, applicants must pass a written test of verbal abilities, judg ment, and aptitude for learning a foreign language; those who . pass the test will be Interviewed to determine If they have the personal qualities needed for the work.
