Duplin County ECIA Chapter 1 Program Duplin County's Education Con solidation and Improvement Act (ECIA) Chapter I program is utilizing in the junior high schools two of the newest programs recommended for use with Chapter 1 students. First, the IS/IS split or split-basal approach is used when all students in the classroom are qualified for the ECIA supplemental assistance. The class is divided as nearly equal as possible. The teacher provides in struction for one-half of the students and the ECIA teacher for the other half. Both use the basal text and supplemental materials for the basal. Both also use the supplemen tary materials provided in the read ing labs. This approach, according to Wil lard Blue, principal of Chinquapin I. and Tommy Benson, principal of North Duplin Jr. High, is welcomed by both teachers and administrators. Principals have cited some of the advantages of the program as: provides for more effective use of time: improves services to students through reduction of class size; and increases cooperation between classroom teachers and ECIA teachers. Second, the utilization* of the computer-assisted instructional ap proach makes it possible for the new technology to become an important ?'H)l fur instructing students in both reading and math. Several of the junior high principals identified some of the advantages of the use of the microcomputer. They indicate that it provides for students and teachers up-to-date technology for use in learning and teaching; in creases interest in learning; enables teachers to better serve the students; and provides immediate feedback for students.
