New Outboor Laws Burning Each year in Duplin County, Woodland acres needlessly go up in smoke. There are many reasons. Among them are: ignorance on how to keep fires under control; not caring if fire is controlled; avoiding proper precautions; carelessness, accidental, and, worst of all, in cendiary. In order to prevent needless fires, a new law enforcement policy is now in effect in Duplin County until further notice. Upon investigation of each fire, the responsible party will be given a verbal warning, written warning, or a citation. Along with the citation, he or she may be fined $50 to $500, 30 days to 4 months in jail, or both at the decision of the court. The responsible party can also be made to reimburse the state what it cost to put out the wildfire. It is also a violation to burn in Duplin County without a burning permit, which is required 24 hours a day. Listed are the 18 burning permit agents in Duplin where a person may obtain a permit free of charge. However, if you have any questions concerning burning, call the County headquarters in Rose Hill at 289-2735 or stop at the office located at the Fire Tower on S.R. 1141, Vi-mile east of Rose Hill.
