Check Before You Pay IRS Penalty In recent weeks, the Internal ? Revenue Service has issued a large number of notices requesting pay ment of unerpayment penalties from taxpayers whose 1983 tax returns included Form 2210. "No one who receives a govern ment notice requesting payment of a penalty for underpayment of taxes should automatically pay the penalty charge without question. Millions of taxpayers have received in error U.S. Government billing notices request ing payment of penalty charges for alleged underpayment of their 1983 income taxes," said Larry King, manager of H&R Block in Warsaw. King said that the IRS has investigated the problem to tax payers being sent erroneous bills for | penalties they do not owe. The problem was traced to a data entry error at government tax return processing centers. As a public sevice, the H&R Block offices in Warsaw will examine notices individuals receive from the government claiming that penalties for underpayment are due, even if the taxpayer has already paid the government claim. The IRS has established procedures for return of erroneous billing notices, and H&R Block offices in Warsaw will handle this procedure for anyone, clients or nonclients, free of charge Correction The July 26th issue of The Duplin Tim?s incorrectly listed County Com missioner C.C. Turner as voting for the motion to lease copy machines for local armories. Commissioner Dovie Penny. William Costin and .Alan Nethercutt voted for the copy machines and Commissioners D.J. Fussell and Turner voted against the motion. The Duplin Times regrets the error and any inconvinence it may have caused our readers.
