Front St. 293-4535 Warsaw ####4 Four County EMC Sets 1985 Youth Tour Plans Ail high school juniors (rising seniors) are eligible to compete for an all-expense-paid trip to Washing ton, D.C. as part of the Rural Electric Youth Tour. The tour, which is sponsored locally by Four County EMC, is scheduled for June 8-15. Four stu dents, one each from Bladen, Duplin, Pender and Sampson counties, will be selected by the cooperative. To enter, students must submit a short essay and an application. These are available from all Four County EMC offices as well as area high school guidance counselors. This year's essay topic is "What Do You Think Life was Like Before Electricity Came to the Homes and Farms in Rural North Carolina?" Applicants may interview some one who remembers what alrfe was like before electricity and tell what the differences between then and now. However, it is not necessary to inverview anyone. Essays should not exceed 300words. The essay must be accompanied by a completed formal application blank. Entries should he mailed bv Feb. 28 to Youth Tour. Four County EMC, P.O. Box 667, B8urgaw, NC 28425. Semi-finalists will be notified be fore March 15 to come for a personal interview. A judging committee will select four winners and four al ternates. Winners will be notified before April 15. There will be one winner and one alternate selected from each, Bladeii, Duplin, Pender and Sampson counites. The local winners will travel by bus to Washington, with approxi mately 30 others sponsored by EMCs across the state. In addition, the young tourists will join approxi mately 1,000 others who are bing sponsored by EMCs nationwide. The group will tour many of the national landmarks such as monu ments. White House, Library of Congress, U.S. Capitol, National Zoo and the Smithsonian Institute. They will meet with their congressional representatives, and will have dinner and see a play at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. Last year's winners included Lisa Bryan, Bladen; Releata Baker, Duplin County: Chris Deal, Pender County; and Julianna Smooth, Sampson County. Sign Language Class The continuing education depart ment of James Sprunt Technical College will offer a course in beginning sign language at Wallace Rose Hill High School. This 36-hour class will be taught on Tuesday from 7-10 p.m. beginning March 5 and ending May 21. The Course, taught by Ben Hilliard, will emphasize the development of communication skills through gesture, finger spelling, facial expression, body movement, placement and hand position. The fee for this class is $10 per person payable the first night of class. A textbook costs approximately $7, in addition.
