On Thursday, the board held a public hearing on the request of J.L. Nichols Jr. to rezone property he recently purchased on East Giff Street adjacent to his business, N&W Food Service Co. He wants the lot rezoned from R-8, a restrictive residential category, to a central business designation. Nichols plans to expand his busi ness and add 40 to SO jobs. He wants to use the lot in question for a parking lot. The board voted to table the matter until a special meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday. Mary Bowden, a nearby resident, opposed the rezoning. She con tended it is a residential area and she dnesn't want to see it turned into a business area. Duplin County Economic Develop ment Director Woody Brinson said the expansion would mean more jobs for Wallace. He said if the company can't expand here it might move. Brinson also said the firm's promise to make more use of the railroad was one of the factors involved in convincing Seaboard System Railroad to continue service as far south as Wallace on the Rocky Mount-Wilmington line. The rail road plans to eliminate the portion of the line from Wallace to Castle Hayne. It originally planned to eliminate the line through Duplin County, as well. After hearing protests of neigh bors, the Wallace Planning Board recommended the rezoning request be denied. Commissioner Charles Blanchard said he would like to look at the property before making a decision. Commissioner Arnold Duncan was absent due to a death in his wife's family. Because of opposition to the rezoning four votes would be re quired for approval. Wallace will advertise its delin quent tax list March 18. The board awarded the town audit contract to Kenneth Farrior, a local certified public accountant. The audit will cost $4,400, $400 more than last year's. Two public hearings are sche duled for the board's March 14 meeting. A hearing on community block grant proposals will be held at 7 p.m. and one on rezoning property at the corner of South Norwood and East Boney streets will be at 7:15 p.m. Achievement Awards The names of 16 individuals and organizations who were judged out standing in the field of wildlife and conservation in 1984 have been released by the North Carolina Wildlife Federation. The selections North Edgecombe ended the season with an overall 31-1 record and the state title, while East Duplin ended it all with a 27-4 mark. Jerry Simpson, a topnotch football quarterback, signed a full scholar ship by Everett Case to attend State, the first ever from Duplin County.
