J ^ Along The Way X. JJLff ur> ?JLi By Emily Killotte f Along the Way deviates from written history this week to present historical photographs featured in this week's Along the Way. The Museum has been very cooperative to: allow the DUPLIN TIMES to publish these early 1900s photos. Dr. Murphy - Duplin County physicians were required to register their practice. The law requiring physicians to register with the county clerk of court became effective statewide in 1889. Pictured above is a Duplin Physician and his unidentified friends. Dr. J.G. Murphy is pictured above wearing the hat and holding a camera. Dr. Murphy registered with the Duplin Clerk of Court April 1, 1904 and held a medical certificate from Pender County which had been issued June 3, 1903. 1 According to information, supplied l)y his niece. Catherine Murphy McKeever, the doctor practiced medicine in Duplin until sometime around 1920. Enclosed with the photos was the .following note from Mrs. Catherine Murphy McKeever of Statesboro, Ga,: Greeting to persons interested in preserving history of Duplin County: Recently my sister and I found these old photographs and decided to send them to you. Our uncle, Dr. J.G. Murphy practiced medicine in Kenansville sometime between 1905 and 1920. There are two shapshots of him: he is on the left on the railroad . tracks, wearing a hat and carrying L the camera. We do not know who is beside him. Also, he is in the "run-about" at the top. We cannot identify the other two men. Anyone with additional informa tion about the following photos can contact George Cowan at the Cowan Museum or Emily Killette at the DUPLIN TIMES/ DUPLIN TODAY office in Kenansville. mmmm ,ib?rty Hull At The Turn Of The Century Liberty Hall today is much different than pictured above. The above photo was taken around the turn of this century and was processed for publication as a post card. Liberty Hall,, the ancestral home of the Kenan family, was constructed in the early 1800s and remained occupied by members of the family until the early 1900s. The home was deeded to the Duplin Board of Commissioners, restored, and opened to the public during the 1960s. Notice the open windows in the photo of Liberty Hall as it was occupied then by members of the Kenan family. Cornerstone Of Present Day Courthouse Uupiin County located its county seat in Kenansville during 1784 and a courthouse was erected.
