"Spiritually the Philippine church has passed through a very trying ordeal for three or four years," he adds. “But the resilency, the latent spiritual resources, and our parti cular form of church organiza tion have produced a hopeful ness, a resolve, and expectancy, and a unity that altogether spell victory in the hard years ahead. The Philippine church earnestly seeks all the cooperation and spiritual help the older church in America can give." Officials and constituted churches of the National Chris tian Council of India are con sidering proposals for a vast edu cational and evangelistic program for the villages of that land by way of the radio. The plan is ambitious: it calls for the es tablishment of a religious de partment in the present All India R§dio (governmental); the establishment of about 130 new transmitting stations in key cen ters of the country; and the placing of at least one receiving set in each of India’s 700,000 vil lages. All-India Radio already has plans for such a wide use of the radio, and the N.C.C. hopes, to help make it an educational rather than an entertainment service. The Board of Missions and Churclf Extension of the Metho dist Church (150 Fifth Ave., New York 11, N. Y.), which for more than a century has been sending young people for life time services as missionaries to Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe, is now asking, in addi tion. tor several hundreds of young men and women for three year service overseas. They will be missionaries of the Church, working alongside the life ser vice missionaries, and it is hop ed that many of them will re main for longer than the three year period of “enlistment.” The fields open for three-year ser vice include teaching, group leadership, preaching, social work, religious education, build ing construction, farming, busi ness management, nursing, medi cal, and public health skills. Countries of service include the Belgian Congo, India, China, Liberia, Malaya, the Philippines and Southern Rhodesia; others may be included later. Applicants must be single men or women, between 21 and 25 years of age, college graduates, members of the Methodist church, and have had some experience in the ser vice sought. The Board will give them specialized training betore sent overseas. Cattle and sheep grazed on pasture treated with a 2, 4-D weed killer have shown no symptoms of discomfort or ill ness. Autumn leaves, when well rotted, make an excellent top dressing for lawns and gardens. They can also be used as a mulching material.
