Judge Finds
'Deacon Jones
Guilty Tuesday
I Ransom (Deacon) Jones was
i found guilty of maintaining a pub
I lie nuisance by Judge Earl Mason
| in Beaufort Recorder s Court Tues
day. Jones was ordered to pay
| $29.15, a hospital bill, and court
costs.
A charge of selling non-tax paid
whiskey was also lodged agalQdt
Jones but he was found not guilty.
I Jones, who lives on Queen Street,
Beaufort, was charged with assault
with intent to kill by Officer Mick
Wade following a free-for-all at
Jones' residence Sunday morning.
Jones and two acquaintances,
David Pringle and Ernest BarreU,
were in the home along with Balr
rett's wife and Jones' daughter,
according to testimony.
A scuffle started between Prin
gle and Barrett and ended when
Jones allegedly struck Pringle on
the head with a hammer.
Says Pringle Attacked
Barrett told the court that Prin
gle attacked him with a chair,
knocking him down and then Prin
gle drew a fazor. lie said he
grabbed Pringle's hands and Prin
gle bit him on the lip.
Barrett's wife told the court that
after Barrett had been knocked
down she call for help and Jones
entered the front room from the
reac of the house. The scuffle took
place in the front room.
No one admitted seeing Jones
hit Pringle with the hammer. Wit
nesses testified that Jones yelled
"Get Out. Get Out!" and the next
thing Pringle was being carried
out of the house.
When Officer Wade arrived Prin
gle was lying in the yard of Jones'
residence unconscious.
Jones' lawyer asked that the
court find Jones not guilty because
he said, Jones was defending his
home and an invited guest. He also
said that the state failed to show
intent to kill, since Priogle was
hit only once.
Gene Smith, solicitor, said that
Jones' place was "more or less a
public place and not ? private do
main." (Jones has been tried pre
viously for having liquor on his
premises). He also said that in
tent to kill doesn't mean that one
has to hit a person a dozen times.
Warrant Amended
Judge Mason ordered the war
rant amended to running a public
nuisance and said Jones must pay
Pringle's hospital bill and costs of
court. He ruled not guilty on the
charge of selling bootleg whiskey
t? Pringle was charged with fighf
ing and public drunkenness an
was sentenced to 30 days on th!
roads suspended on two years good
behavior.
Barrett was charged with assault
and public drunkenness. He was
ordered to pay costs. Solicitor
Smith wanted to drop charges
against both Pi ingle and Barret f.
but was overruled by Judge Mason.
Mr. Smith also requested a per
jury warrant for Jones, and again
was overruled.
