To Give Benefit Concert

Baptist Churches Observe
WMS Focus Week
This week throughout the Sou
thern Baptist Convention, churches
have been observing Woman's
Missionary Society Focus Week.
Focus Week is a time for activity,
attraction and attention: activity
in some phase of the missionary
program, attempting to attract
new members to the missionary
organisation, and gaining the at
tention of the church.
On Sunday, the evening services
will bring the Focus Week to a
close with a special service at
which time all WMS members 1
will sit together. After the ser
vice all women of the church, and
their families, arc invited to go
to the educational building for a
short social gathering.

ELMER ELLSWORTH NICHOLS
Elmer Ellsworth Nichols, 73,
died Wednesday morning at his
home at 909 Evans St., Morehead
City.
Funeral services will be held at
3 o'clock Friday afternoon at the
home, with the Rev. J. F. Her
bert, pastor of the First Methodist
Church, officiating. Burial will be
in Bay View Cemetery.
Mr. Nichols, a retired merchant,
is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eula
Wade Nichols, a daughter, Mrs.
Theodore Economon, and one
grandson, all of Morehead City.
MRS. SIMON O'NEAL
Ocracoke, Jan. 14? Mrs. Simon
O'Neal, age 74, died Jan. 11 after
a long illness at her hoiil^'tiere.
Services were held Jan. 12 at the
Assembly of God Church, with the
Rev. Churchill and the Rev. W.
R. Hale officiating.
Surviving arc three children,
Mrs. Horace Gaskins, Benjamin
L. O'Neal, and Elijah O'Neal, all

Wednesday morning at his home
at Otway.
Surviving are his wife, two

way; a son, Sylvester of Otway, a
brother, Oliver, of Fayettevillc,
and two sisters, Mrs. Arlctte Gil
likin, Mrs. Teeny Lawrence, both
of Otway.

Mrs. Herbert Thornton enter
tained the Wednesday afternoon
bridge club at her home in Mans
field Park this week.
Mrs. C. B. Arthur was high
scorer, Mri. B. F. Royal was sec
ond high and Mrs. M. T. Mills was
low.
The hostess served chicken salad
sandwiches, potato chips, choco
late nabiscos and colas. The club
will meet with Mrs. Arthur next

On Life of Albert Schweitzer

day night on The Life and Works
of Dr. Albert Schweitzer. She told
of his works as a theologian, mu
sician, missionary and doctor, and
of his influence on vast numbers
of people all over the world. Her
talk was most interesting and in
spirational and was enjoyed by
everyone present, according to
Mrs. Gus Davis, chairman of the
department. Mrs. W. C. Carlton
introduced Mrs. Roberts.
Mrs. Davis, presided at the
meeting, which was held at the
civic center. She commented that
the name of Mrs. Clarence Tay
lor had been omitted from the
Christmas decorations committee
at the preceding meeting.
Mrs. Jasper Phillips acted as
secretary in the absencc of Mrs.
Milton Roush. Mrs. S. A. Horton
gave the treasurer's report.
Mrs. Davis reported that the
February meeting would be the
department's annual dinner party.
Mrs. A. F. Chestnut will replace
Mrs. Malcolm Goodwin as chair
man of the dinner committee.
Others serving on the commit
tee. in addition to Mrs. Chestnut
and Mrs. Goodwin, are Mrs. W. L.
Derrickson, Mrs. E. M. Dewey,

sale of the centennial books. She
said that Mr. Charles Markey,

as possible.

Attend Conference

program at the annual mid winter
conference Sunday, Jan. 27, in

To Give Tea in February
Mrs M T. Loutit announced to
the Garden and Civic Department
Wodneaday afternoon plana lor an
international tea to be sponsored
by the department Feb. 2. The tea
will be held at the civic center,
where the group meets, and all
foreign-born persona in the county
wilt be invited.
Mr?. F. C. Salisbury, president,
stated that the department will
request the town to maintain the
grounds around the recreation
building.
Mrs. Salisbury also announced
the committees to canvass in' the
sale of centennial booklets, and
defined the areas of town they will
cover.

Dr. W. M. Brady presided at the
County Medical Society meeting
Monday night at the hospital in
Morehead City. President John
Way was out of town, and since
Dr Brady was last year's presi
dent, he took charge of a short
business meeting.
Dr. John W. Morris was named
program chairman for 1957. The
only ther business brought up
was a brief financial report con
cerning two radios purchased by
the doctors for the nurses. One
radio has been placed on each
floor of the Morehead City Hos
pital.
