Phone PA8-31I1 mm old'fashiontd custom, 'tis tru *, But it's * custom u>e still think is sublime, To sing out our good wishes to job tor a simply p*rf*ct btppy holiday timtl Cherry's Market Morehead City Vi&UAUUf Jj by Larry MoComb I At Chrutmaatime To most everyone Christmas and the holidays means a time for family get-togethers, Christmas dinners, holi day festivities and the like, but to sports writers it also means something else ? a time when sports copy is about as hard to come by as a can of uncontaminated cranberry sauce. This is the time when the high school basketball teams annually take a two-week rest period from competition and other sports slow down almost to a standstill. Christmas does give us the opportunity though of put ting down a few Christmas wishes and sending them down the line. So if we could play Santa Claus for one day here's the gifts we would like to put in some local stockings: At the top of the list would be a new gym for the Morehead City high school. At the same institution we would like to put a couple of 190-pound guards and two speedy halfbacks in Norman Clark's stocking. To Helen Jernigan we would like to give another year of eligibil ity for Jenny Lou Smith wick and to Gannon Talbert, a win over Newport. For the Beaufort Seadogs there's not much more you can wish them with two state championships already in the stocking for 1959, but a few things they could use would be a return trip to Winston-Salem, another de cade of Hassells and an All-Conference fullback. For Curt Lancaster we would see him go through one week of football practice without an injury on the squad. Our shopping list for 'Ralph' Hewitt would include a frosh game with Morehead City and a guard of the home grown variety. For Ruffy our present would be one hour in a locked room with the referees of the Norlina game. For coach Tom McQuaid we would like for him to have the pleasure of dunking Curt Lancaster in the shower when the Seadogs win the state basketball cham pionship. A gift for Jim Fodrie would be a win for his girls. Skipping down to Smyrna we would include on our shopping list for Jim Parkin a bottle of tranquilizer pills to be taken immediately before, during and after his two games with Beaufort. For Walter Fulcher we would like to see him get three 6'5" guards to go with Carolyn Phelps and Jean Willis so he won't have to break up the set. The. best gift we could give Braxton Piner would be a shut-out and four-for-fyur against Pud Hassell this spring. For the school we would put in the stocking enough money and local backing to start a football team: While we're Down East we would skip on over to At lantic and put in Roy Cockerham's stocking a starting lineup averaging 20 points per man per game. The name of Roger Harris on the Atlantic honor roll would also help. Our first gift to Doug Schafran and Newport would be two carpenters to remove those rails in front of the bleachers in the gym before someone gets hurt on them. Then would come an All-County selection for Jenny Lynn Garner and some baseball caps. There are a lot of other people we would like to in clude on this year's shopping list. If any of the follow ing are on your list and you haven't decided what to get them yet here are a few ideas: Nick Galantis ? a year's supply of lime. Skip Willis ? an electric cart to shuttle him up and down the sidelines. Thomas Oglesby ? a tremendous Thank-You for the hours of work he put in to readying the football field this year. Dom Femia ? a heated broadcasting booth at the Beaufort football field. Mayor Potter ? a seat on the 50-yard line next to Mayor Dill for the Mullet Bucket game next year. Bernard Leary ? 100 new members for the Touch down Club. Carl Sadler ? Bobby Martin for a guardian. Fearless Fraley ? a return trip ticket from Africa. Before closing we would like to say thanks to all the schools in the county for a year of sports events that provided the most in sheer thrills and enjoyment in watching and covering and our best wishes to everyone for a most Holy Christmas and an even greater year in ' 1960. s That's 30 for now. i Boat Winner ?HHWMMiLVfr ' ' Ralph Cuthrell, Enfield, poses betide the 17-foot outboard motor boat he won in the 1959 Fabulous Fishermen contest. Cuthrell was a trophy winner in the contest and thus qualified for the drawing for the grand priie which was held at Capt. Bill's restaurant Dec. 8. Blue Devils Rack Atlantic Easily The Smyrna Blue Devils had little4 [rouble making it eight wins for Ihe season Friday night as they coasted to a 64 38 win over the At lantic Pirates in a Seashore Con ference tilt. The game, played at Smyrna, saw the Blue Devils jump out to an early lead and maintain com fortable margins over the Pirates hroughout the contest. An added attraction for the eve ling was the crowning of Sherry }illikin as Junior Miss Blue Devil ind Olivia Yeomans as Senior Miss Hue Devil. Miss Gillikin is a scv ?nth grader and Miss Yeomans is a reshman. In the preliminary contest the Smyrna girls made it a clean sweep or the night as they downed the Atlantic girls 44-29.
