Safety S. ’ ■■■ »'■ The old adage to the ef fect that there is stfety in numbers certainly does not apply in automobile travel, 1 according to Ronald Ho- 1 cutt, director of the North 1 Carolina Highway Safety ! Division. “Happiness is the key- 1 note when a group of 1 young people pile into an ! automobile and start off to the fai&or a football game, or on s&tbe other short trip, but if they overcrowd the car, grief may soon enter the picture,” said the safe ty director. •i Hocutt pointed to the re- in which an amomobile loaded with eight young people over turned while enroute to a high school football game, injuring four of the boys and girls in the car and killing two. “There is serious danger • in the practice of overload ing an automobile,” he de clared. “In the first place, I when three or four people i are jammed into the front i seat, the dirver does not . have sufficient room to the car safely, due ;l to the difficulty of shifting i gears and using the brakes. > And on top of that, when i i there are too many people i in a car, the driver has too , many distractions and can not very well keep his or her mind on their driving.” Hocutt cautioned all par ; owners against overload ing the automobiles, and he .particularly urged that parents who allow their ] teen-age children the fami,- j ly car to go to a football j game, dance or other j school activity should ad- j monish their children not j to take along any greater ! number of persons than i the car was designed to ac commodate. ; next Tuesday r :for Jones |boro, Tennessee.
