The others are the Wild Turk ey, the Dove, the Red-He aded Woodpecker, the Wo od Duck, the Catbird, and the Scarlet Ttfnager. It is thought to be desirable that we select some bird other than anyone selected by ' other states. As everybody j has a right to a vote, by sending to L. H. Jobe, Ral eigh, N. C., his or her cho ice, there probably will be other choices. It migr.„ be well to study the list above. ■ The Red-Wing is not a bundant in Yancey County. However, it is found in the Concord neighborhood and perhaps in some other lo calities. Different individuals of this species vary greatly in sizer.-Generally the length is from seven to nine in ches. The male is bluish black with red shoulder stripes bordered by yellow. The female is finely speck ed with dim black; the shoulders are obscurely or ange red. This variety is slow to .take on mature plumage and color. Swamps and roadsides are favorite nesting places. The nest is built, as a rule just ,a few feet above the ground in alders or other shrubbery; occasionally it , is placed in a tuft of grass. From three to six is the number of eggs, which are finely marked with lines, dots, and patches of black and lilac. Frequently the same nest is used for two broods. The bird is gregar ious. Many nests are often ! found close together. A variety of food is con sumed, consisting largely of weed seed, weevils, sno ut beetles, grasshoppers, snails and other crustac eans. Grain forms a very small item of its diet. The vocal powers of this species are of some note. There jpe two periods, the first ending July, the sec ond and shorter perioc coming in October. - The naturalist, Mathews, says that its song, the “Bal lad of the Bog”, is as fol lows: “O-ka-lee, Cong-quer ree, You choo-tea, olong tea! Gl-oogl-ee, conk-a-tree, Qiiang-se-tea, shoo-chong tea»” - . The Red-Wing is a very j striking and beneficial bird. tJames Hutchins.)
