(IDS OPENED FOR MARS HIU GYM MARS HILL Bids totall ing $1,340,965 for the const ruction of a huge new gym na sum - physical education building at Mars Hill College were opened here Wednesday. Dickerson Inc. of Monroe was the low bidder on the general cont act. Low bidders for sub contracts for plumb ing. electrical work and heat lrg ard ventilating were San itary Plumbing & Heating Co. of Greenville, S. C., Bryant Electric Co. of Brevard and Moser Plumbing Co. of Ashe vi le respectively. 4 Amounts of the individual bids were not made public by the college. Robert Wrenn of chairman of the buildings and grounds committee of the board of trustees, said con tracts will be awarded within the next few days, as soon as certain technical details have been Ironed out. Other members of the corn-' mittee present for the open ings were J. David Taylor of Charlotte, the Rev. Henry Crouch of Winston-Salem and the Rev. John Knight of Asheville. Dr. Robert GaTlson of Charlotte, Mrs. Leon Seymour of Southern Rices, Lee Cain of Winston-Salem and Pey ton Ivie of Murphy are also members of the committee. Six Associates Inc. of Ashe ville designed the building and will coordinate the engi neering during . construction. Henry Gaines, head of the firm, said he hopes construc tion can begin within the t\ext two weeks. He estimated comjyetion will take 15-18 months. C., has returned to Port Bragg, N. C., after serving with the inter-American peace force in the Dominion Re public. t Sergeant Arrowood is a for ward observer In the 82d Air borne Division, which formed part of the peace force estab lished by the Organization of American States. The 22-year-old soldier en tered the Army In July, 1962. He Is a graduate of Cane River High School. Dr. Hbyt Blackwell, presi dent of the college, has em phasized to alumni that the huge structure will not be .simply a place to play basket ball but that it will be a phy sical education building. It contain a full-size basket ball court with seats for ap proximately 3,000 spectators, hut It will also contain other courts, playing areas, dressing rooms, classrooms, rest rooms and offices. “It will be a highly func tional multi-purpose build ing,” explained Don Hender son, athletic director and head of the department of physical education. “It will provide the facili ties we need for five major programs,” he said. “It Will serve our (1) academic pro grams in physical education, (2) the gym classes we re qui e of all able-bodied stud ents, (3) intramural sports programs for both men and women, (4) our entire pro gram of intercollegiate sports and (5) general recreation for both students and faculty.” Financing the construction of the building will require an extensive fund-raising campaign, Dr. Blackwell said. Although some funds are on hand and the co’Jege has been authorized to borrow $750,000 a substantial amount still must be raised from alumni and friends. __ . June 15 meeting of the Mlt \ cheL-Yancey Mental Health | Association In Bmnsville at the Yancey County Public Library. The players were Mrs. Trena Fox, Mrs. Nellie Styles and Miss Marilyn Lau ghrun. A discussion followed, led by 1 Vincent Anderson of Raleigh, audio-visual consultant or the North Carolina State Library, who is in this area supervising the instruction of a group of volunteer library trainees. Mrs. LoueLa Honeycutt pre sided in the absence of the president, James T. Mcßae, M. D., F. A. C. S., of Spruce Pine. A list of films on mental health, available for presenta tion by interested groups, was 1 distributed. The following vice presi dents were elected: Rev. Nells Larsen of Spruce Pine, Dr. W. A. Y. Sargent of Bur nsville and Mrs. Clyde Geouge of Bakersville. 11118 completes the roster of officers who will serve the recent’y organized two-county association. Hie next meeting will be held In Bakersville at 8 p. m., Tuesday, July 13.
