By in vitation I was a passenger in a Bel-Air Chevrolet on a trip from Black Mountain, N. C. to California. Our par ty consisted of Mrs. Hattie Metcalf, her two sons Glenn of Knoxville, Tenn. and Rob ert of Ridgecrest, Cal., (owner and driver) a daugh ter ,Mrs. Lucy Bennett, (Addie) cf Los Vegas, Nev. and myself. Leaving Black Mountain on Thursday, ,October 7, we drove out of Asheville via the River Road to Knoxville, Tenn. where we dropped Glenn off. Alas! we had tire trouble. Robert bought two new tires. To make up for the delay we sped along as fast as the law would allow to Nashville and Memphis where we crossed the Miss issippi into Arkansas and up for the night at the Coachman’s Inn in Wayne, Ark., a lovely motel (31 or more rooms, $lO 00 per room) and we all slept the sleep of the just. Time was of the essence because Robert is stationed at the Naval Air Force Base in Channel Lake, Cal. and had to report for duty on Monday morning, Oct. 11. We rode steadily from Wayne, Ark. to Win slow, Arizona taking y 2 hour resting periods for Bob to sleep. Addie helped out some with the driving. Bob had a little more trouble with spark plugs, points, etc., but WANTED CORDWOOD TOP PRICES BEING PAID WE PAY sl7 00 for 5,000 lbs. POPLAS, MAPLE, CUM, SOURWOOD. Phone 669-8766 OMH WUK DA B- 7 AM. I, 5 DM. AMERICAN PARBOARD CO. Dox 756 Black Mountain/ N.C. being a good mechanic he ironed out the trouble him self from which time every thing went perfect. After a good nights’ rest at the Knoty Pine Motel, Winslow, Ariz., we rode all day thro ugh the torrid Arizona Des ert to Eou’der Dam and into Nevada. Crossing the moun tains to Knoxville I felt I was in a freezer then on the desert I was “boiled, sizzled and fried” almost to a crisp. We reached. Los Vegas cn Sunday, October 10 about 2:30 p m. Poor Mrs. Metcalf seemed ‘"done in.” Addie was home and greeted by a hap py husband, and a happier dog. Phoning to my son Ron ald he suggested I complete the trip by plane. So I boarded a 6:15 p. m. Bonan za Airline Plane a">d was at the Los Angeles Airport at 1:30 p. m. where I was given a very warm welcome by the California Angells. This should have been a happy ending but unfortunately the strain of the hurry-up trip and unbearable heat of the desert caused my heart to act up, so that on Tues day, October 12th. I landed in the Rivera Community Hospital, Torrance, Oalif. where I will only be for a few days’ rest. As usual, God Is working through the fine doctors and kind nurses to restore my health and I am revelling in a life of ease and comfort, also adding a few pounds from the excell ent food. Be back at my trailer home at 129 N. W., 79th. St., Miami, Fla., 33150, sometime around November Ist. to stli. More Anon.
