Alass Meeting Scheduled With Social Security Representative A mass meeting of major importance to all citizens 65 years of age and older, resid ing in the Tri-County area (Avery, Mitchell, Yancey) will be held in the auditor ium of the Harris Elemen tary School in Spruce Pine December 10, at 9:00 a. m., according to Mr. D. C. Nich ols, Field Representative out cf the Asheville Social Sec urity office. This meeting is for the purpose of signing up all cit be's 65 years aid older, and those who will become 65 be fore March 31, 1966, for I Medicare (hospitalization) and its accompanying medi cal benefits If you are now receiving Social Security payments, and have received, filled in and returned the card sent out by the Social Security office, it will not be essential for you to attend this meeting. You may re call that this card asks that you signify by checking "Yes” or "No” your desire to participate in the medical benefits. Another point to empha size is that no social security coverage is necessary to sign up for Medi-care. Every per son 65 years of age before 3-31-66 is eligible. Mr. Nichols sa'd he could not stress too strongly the importance of every eligible citizen in the three counties attending this meeting Oth erwise, or possibly stand in line for hours to see your local representative, who is only at your court house for a few hours twice monthly. The main purpose of this mass meeting is to take the load off your local represen tative, as he simplyy does not have the time in the few hours he is there to take care of this in addition to the many other duties he has to perform. While the purpose of this mass meeting is to sign up and exp.ain Medi-care bene fits to eligible persons, other benefits to social security re cipients will be explained. For instance,, did it ever oc cur to you that you may be missing out on social secur ity benefits? Possibly you or your husband have in the requ red number of quarters 10 be drawing monthly checks, but you are unaware of it. If you arc still working, and do not consider yourself retired, you too may be eli gible if you are earning un der a certain amount. You may have a part time job, or a seasonal job where you are earning so little it would not hinder your receiving social security benefits. And did you know that beginning Jan. 1966 you may earn as much as SISOO yearly, Instead of the current SI2OO, without penalized? Bake a Goody Tree with a rich base of graham cracker crumbs, and decorate it with your favorite peppermint icing. Place toy cookies and animal crackers on top. The youngsters will delight in pulling off the little cracker trimmings from their portion, while the, older set will savor the cake’s outstanding flavor, which complements any holi day punch. Add a final touch of glory to a holiday meal with this Christmas cake. Here’s how: 1 package Sunshine Graham Cracker Crumbs (13% ox.) 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 'cup sifted all-purpose flour Vj cup shortening, room temperature 1 2 cups sugar Mix crumbs well with baking powder and flour; set aside. Cream shorten ing, gradually adding sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Mix milk with vanilla and alternately fold crumb mixture and milk mixture into creamed shortening and sugar, beginning and ending with dry material. Grease and paper-line two tree-shaped pans (10" from tip to bottom). Distribute batter evenly. Bake in preheated moderately hot oven (375'F.) for 45 minutes. Cool in pans on racks for 10 minutes. Hemove cakes from pans. When cool, fill and frost with your favorite peppermint icing and decorate with toy cookies, animal crackers, and silver dragees.
