Sanchagrtn Ass’t. Extension Agent Those families witt the names and faces around Burnsville may have seen a few strangers around town for the past few weeks. The Extension Service and WA. MY. Community Action, Inc. was asked to participate in training of 3 VISTA Vol unteers and as a resu’t there were new faces around Yan cey County for 3 weeks. Anne Robertson came to us from Waco, Texas; Fran Johnson from Auburn, New' .York; and Fay Smith from Pasedena, California, after ten days of class work In Durham, N C. these trainees came to Yancey County to live and work. Each lived with a local family and met and worked with the various agencies and p r oiects In the county. The volunteers spoke with Mrs Ruby Smith Act ing Director of the Welfare, Mrs. Thomas at the L'brary, and other agency heads They a’so had a con tract with the Neighborhood Youth Corps Adult Educa tion classes, and community films showings. Fiit most of all th’s was a chance for these voluotteers to line In and experience a culture and way of hfe some what different from their own. It was a chance for them to reaMze that the mountain culture is as Am erican as can be; yet it is also distinctive. The fast paced city life met the cas ual rural life, perhaus for the first time for these vol unteers. During these 3 weeks these trainees gained an experience that will fit them to be excellent com- THE YAtfCEY RECORD munity workers. Those who missed seeing these volunteers or wonder ed Just who they were will perhaps see another group around in the near future For the VISTA, training officers were very well pleas ed with the training sched ule set up by .the Extension— W AMY. team and they have asked that future groups of the vollunteers ge allowed to train in Yancey Comity. Roy A. Taylor To Speak At Chamber Dinner The annual dinner meet ing and ladles' night of the Yancey County Chamber of Commerce will be held at East Yancey High School Cafeteria Friday, April 22, at 7:00 p. m. -- $175 per plate. The food is being prepared by the Home Economics De partment. Proceeds will be used for equipment for that department. The Hon. Roy A. Taylor will be the speaker. He has been asked to speak on sub jects pertinent to the work which the Chamber of Com merce has been doing this past year, that Is better ed ucation In public schools, better highways, Industrial development, and tourism. No business will be con ducted other than approval of the Incoming Board of Directors, since It is de sirable to give as much time as possible to the speaker.
