C. was graduated from eight weeks of recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot here. Under the supervision of veteran noncommissioned of ficer Drill Instructors, he learned sma l arms marks manship, bayonet fighting, and methods of self-protec tion. He also received in struction in mi itary drill, history and traditions of the Marine Corps, and other academic subjects. He will now undergo four weeks of individual combat training and four weeks of basic specia Ist training in his military job field before being assigned to a perman ent unit. FORT LEE, VA. Instruc tion was also given in am munition handling and communications DA NANO, VIETNAM (FHTNC) Aug. 12 Marine First Lieutenant Morris D. Atkins, son of Mrs. T. M. Atkins of Route 8, Burns vil e, N. C., is a member of Marine All-Weather Fighter Squadron 235, (VMF-AW -2351, First Marine Aircraft Wing, Da Nang, Vietnam. VMF-235 uses the >-8E "Crusader" jet aircraft, and is the on’y land-based cru-' sader squadron in Vietnam. His squadron’s mission la to intercept and destroy enemy aircraft and missiles under all types of weather conditions, at day or night. FOR.T LEE, VA. (AHTNC —Army Private Roy S. Wil son, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs- Sam T. Wilson, Micaville, N. C. completed a cooking course at Fort Lee, Va-. August 12. VIETNAM (AHTNC)- Army Private First Cass Robert D. Carroway, 21, son of Mrs. Love P. Carroway, Route 5, Box 51, Burnsville, N. C. was assigned to the Ist Cav a’ry Division in Vietnam. July 20. Pvt. Carroway, a mortar man in Company C, 2d Battalion of the division's sth Cava’ry, entered on ac tive duty in January 1966 and was last stationed at Fort Polk, La. He is a 1963 graduate of Ea*t Yancey High Pchoo’ and was employed by Northrope Coro., before entering the Army. FORT JACKSON, S. C. (AHTNC) Army Private John C. McMahan, 19, son of Mr. anl Mrs. James H- McMahan, Route 3, Burns vil’e, N. C., completed a wire course at Fort Jackson, S. C-, Aug 12. LIVES SAVED Less than a week after a CARE-MEDICO team in Malay sia cabled New York headquart ers for the drug, gamma globulin arrived by plane to combat a measles epidemic which was causing deaths among children and young adults. Drah Rejectee Program Announced The State Board of Health has completed plans for a new Draft Rejectee Medical counseling Program. Health Counselors I, II and ni will be employed to contact med ical rejectees and counsel with the rejectee and his family to arrange for the correction of his medical de fect or handicap, or help with his rehabi itation. Re ferrals of rejectees will be made to welfare depart ments, hea'th departments, clinics and other applicable agencies as needed. Selected personnel will attend special federal training programs in medical counseling. App'ications are being ac-' cepted for review at the State personnel Department, 121 West Jones Street, Raleigh, N. c.
