LOCALS Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bowler left cn Tuesday for a week's visit n New York City with Mr. Bowler’s family. Mrs. George Smith of Ashe ville was a week-end guest of Mrs. Troy Ray. Mrs. Smith is a former resident of Burnsville. Mrs. Grace Grassmuck of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has * returned to her “Story Eook ,; home on Cattail. She was accompan'ed by her daughter and grandson, Mrs. Ke th Phillips and Keith, Jr., of Coral Gables, Fla. Mrs. Phili ps and Keith, Jr. returned heme on Monday-. Howard Murphy, of Erwin, Tenn., was the week-end guest of h's sister, Mrs. Lee Boone and Mr. Boone, and his mother Mrs. W. C. Murphy. mrs. John Bennett of the Nu- Wray Inn left Wednesday, the 3ru for a v.sit with her brother. Bill Wray,, in Sanford, Florida. After visit ng Mr. Wray she will fly to St. Thomas, V.rgin Islands, for a visit with her daughter, Mrs. Bob Gould, and family. Mrs. Tessa Swlnk returned to her home in Burnsville Wed nesday, after a visit of several weeks with her Lewis Swink, in New York C.ty. Edde Calloway was honored Sunday, May 7th, at his home in Pensacola with a fam ly din ner on h s 50th birthday. Pre sent for the occasion were his two daughters and sister, Euteva Ro'and fr;m Pensacola, one son of Hickory, his mother and bro ther and s ster from Farview, also nieces and nephews. A total cf 25 gathered around the d nner table, and needless to say a fine time was had by all. Mr Troy Howell of Route 2, is a patent in Spruce Pine Com munity Hospital. Mr. Plato Penland is in Mem orial Mission Hospital in Ashe ville. Mr and Mrs. Leonard Chand ler of Route 3 became the proud parents of a son. bom in Yan cey Hospital May 9. Silver President Os Warren Wilson Student Group John David Silver (better known as J ; D. to his classmat es), son of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Slvers of Bolens Creek, has been elected President of the Student Body of Warren-Wilson College for the 1967-68 school year. J. D. graduated in the 1965 Class of East Yancey H'gh School. While in high school he was active in practically every thing, including football, basket ball, baseball, student council, drama, yearbook. In hb senior year he made All-Conference in both football and basketball and was voted “Most athletic" and "most mischcvious”.' Last year he attended West Carol na College on a football THE YANCEY RECORD Miss Cooper Plays Lead In 'South Padfic’ . Betty Cooper Dr. and Mrs. L. F. Mitchell of Spindale spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Cooper, coming especially to attend the Spring Musical, “South Pacific”, given by The Little Theatre of Western Carolina College. Betty, daughter of Muriel and “Coop”, played the lead role. Others attending from Burns ville were Mrs. Margaret Tyner, Mrs. Elizabeth Silver, Mrs. Vint Westall and daughter Martha Ann, and Mr. and Mrs. Z. B. Byrd. The production opened Tues day, May 2nd and ran through Sunday, May 7th. The Burnsville group remain ed for the yearly awards of the Drama Dept., seeng Betty re ceive two of the coveted awards, which were presented by Dr. Reid, Peesident of the college. Betty has had the honor of serv ing on the Little Theatre Board for two years. The Little Theatre is not a club. It is an organization simi lar to the Western Carolinian, and, like the paper, the Theatre, too, must have its “guid'ng edi tors” in this case the Board. The members are chosen in op en vote by the Theatre “Fam ily”, cons'st ng of students from all over the campus who love Mrs. Wilson Celebrates Birthday Mrs. Lula Wilson, Rt. l, Bur nsville, a life-long resident of the Jacks Creek section, cele brated her 91st birthday Sun day, May 7, at the home of her son, Ben Wilson. Gathered around the family dinner table in celebration of the event were Mrs, Wilson’s children, E. D. Wilson, Mrs. Emory Roland, Mrs. Rhea Pen land, Mrs. Carter Randolph, and Ben Wilson, at whose home the d nner was held. In addition to Mrs. Wilson’s sons and daugh ters, her sister, Mrs. Cora ' Franklin as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grand children were in attendance. scholarship, where he majored in physical education and play ed football. He transferred to Warren Wilson, where he is majoring in education. He hopes to get his masters degree and teach at the high school level, along wth some coaching on the side. He says Ivs mam interest is in workning with young people in the feld of recreation. Last summer he gained some practi cal experience along this line when he worked with the Yan cey County Pace Program, and coached church ball teams, the magic and mystery of Theatre, and contribute their services as either actors, or backstage with the “Techs”. This year, for the first time in its nine year history, the Board has a woman cha’rman. Under Betty Cooper’s guidance, the Board has taken on new re sponse lities. It is the Board which now chooses the p’avs to be presented, production dates, and particularly the discussion of spec'al requests rfom the Family. The Board’s most important duty is in choos : ng the Student Drectors for the major full length plays. It is the Theatre’s pride that this is the only Col lege Theate in the State where Directing Majors are given the chance to direct full-length pro ductions. Woman’s Club Cancels May Meeting Due to the many conflicts brought about by school activi ties in which the members of the Burnsville Women’s Club are engaged, *the May meeting will not be held. N.C. Cane River Banquet At Battery Park The Junior class of Cane River High School presented the ban quet for the Senior class Satur day evening, May sixth. The banquet took place in the Bat tery Park Hotel of Asheville. The Junior sponsors are: Mrs. E. Boone, Mrs. N. Deyton, Mr. J. Neil, and Mr. H. Cox. Senior sponsors are: Mrs. C. Cox, Mrs. K. Zuver, Mrs. J. Sparks and Mr. J. Buckner. The theme for the banquet was “Roman Holiday”. The fol lowing people presented the pro gram, which centered around this theme: Lois Doan, Senior Toastmaster; Betty Bennett, Junior “Rome Was Not Built in a Day”; Van Hylemon, Sen ior, “We came—We Saw—We Conquered”; Gary Deyton, Jun ior, “Nero Fiddles While Rome Burns”; Bardy Bailey, Senior, “Thumbs Up—Thumbs' Down”; Sonya Ba : ley, Senior, “Render Unto Caesar”. A group of stud ents sang two appropriate songs. Follow ng the program a sup per was served.
