No Opposition Raised On Parkway Hearing WASHINGTON Not a single voice of opposition was raised here Friday during a hearing cn legislation introduced by 11th District Rep. Roy A. Taylor and by two Georgia Congressmen to extend the Buie Ridge Parkway to Atlanta, Ga. Witness after witness told members cf the National Parks and Recreation Subcommittee of the house Interior C mmittee that the 180-mile addition to the famous scenic highway is ur gently needed to meet recrea tional demands from bustling metropolitan centers in the Southeast. * Rep. Taylor, Chairman of the subcommittee, and Georgia Con gressmen John W. Davis and Phil Landrum, co-authors, called for enactment of the legislation as quickly as possible to enable the two states to begin acquiring rights-of-way. National parkway experts from the Department of Interior told the subcommittee that extension of the parkway is a logical de velopment to meet national re creation demands. Michael Frome of Alexandria, Va., noted author in the field of conservation and one of the chief spokesmen of the national conservationist movement said the project has his “whole hearted and enthusiastic sup port.” He called the Blue Ridge Parkway “the finest, best-plan ned motor highway of its kinH in the world." Witnesses from Western North Carolina included Frank Brown of Cullowhee, Chairman of the N'Tth Carolina National Park, Parkway and Forests Develop ment Commission; Richard K. Degenhardt, Executive Vice Pre sident of the Asheville Chamber of Commerce; and Tom L. Mal ltnee of Candler, President of Western North Carolina Associat ed Communities and Rep. Tay lor’s District Assistant. A report submitted to Congress in 1963 in which the extension was strongly recommended es timates its cost at $87,536,000. Taylor stressed that construction can be funded from already-au thorized annual parkway con struction appropriations and would not necessitate any in crease in present nationwide parkway construction spending.
