"This program will consist of a two-way exchange between forty youths in the four counties and forty youths in the four counties of Dunn, Barron, Polk, and Rusk in VAa consin. The youths will spend six days in a family in Wiscon sin with a young person of the same age and sex in the fami ly. The trip will consist of ten days total. Two days go ing and two days coming will be needed." The young people and their chaperones will be spending one night in Lafayette, Indiana, on their way up and back. "This trip is designed to give youths in this rural mountainous area a chance to get acquainted with young people and fami - lies in a rural farming area of another state", said Archie Pierce. 'Miss Maykmd' Competition Young ladies from Avery, Mitchell and Yancey Coun - ties will compete for the title of Miss Mayland. The Pa - geant, which will be held on July 30th and 31st in Spruce Pine, is a coordinated sponsor ship of the Yancey, Avery and Mitchell County Jaycees. Contestants will include 5 girls from each county to be judged in three categories: Ta The youths in Wisconsin are 4-Heis and come primari ly from families living on the dairy farms. Dairy farming and small agricultural busines ses make up the bulk of the lent, Swimsuit and Everting Gown. Scholarships totalling $600.00 will be awarded to Miss Mayland, Ist and 2nd Runners up and Miss Congenia lity. Miss Mayland will represent the three counties in the 1971 Miss North Carolina Pageant. Girls interested in entering the Pageant should contact any member of the Jaycee organi zation. income for these counties o f Wisconsin. Marie Jensen, a Vista Volunteer from Wiscon - sin, feels, "the opportunity to share problems and ex peri ernes with youths in another area may stimulate youths in this area to work in different ways to solve the problems they find facing them daily." The only cost incurred by each person is an initial $lO for use toward room and meals to and from Wisconsin and spelling money (approx. $10) while there. The remainder of the money needed has been raised by contributions from the following organizations: 4-H Clubs in all four coun ties, The Pioneers Youth Coun cil in all four comities, Mabel Methodist Chinch in M abel Community, Brush Fork Bap - tist Church in Vilas, Newland Women's Club, the Agricul tural Workers Council in Avery County, the Presbyterian Qmh in Bakersville, United Metho dist Church of Spruce Pine, the Presbyterian Church in Burnsville, Bald Creek Baptist Church in Yancey, the Youth Council in Burnsville,the Jay cees in Burnsville, the Plum Tree Presbyterian Church in Avery County, Linville Falls Community Church in Avery. The second half of the ex change trip will take place in July when forty youths from the families visited in Wiscon sin will spend six days ( July 10-17) in families here in the four counties. In most cases the youths from Wisconsin will stay in the family of the young person who visited them. In situations where families are crowded or other situations ex ist, an alternate host family will be secured. At present, there is one position unfilled. If you are between the ages of 14 and 19 and would be interested in this trip, contact any of the above groups and they will give you the necessary person to con tact for this position. Off Athletia Committee A Burnsville youth has been named to one of the major committees at Mars Hill Col - lege for the 1970-71 academic year. He is Dean Hicks, son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Hicks of Route 2, Burnsville. A rising senior majoring in physi cal education, he will serve on the Athletics Committee, a committee which de v e lops guidelines for the intercolle - giate sports program at the 114-year-old Baptist school. Appointment of students to what had traditionally be e n faculty committees is a re - cent innovation by the faculty. The move is designed to en courage greater student parti cipation in the governance of the college. Final selection was by vote of the Student Government Association.
