East Yancey Field Day Excitement filled the air at East Yancey High School last Friday afternoon when the school's First Annual Field Day was launched. The field events consisting of the long jump, basketball andsoftba 11 throw got underway at noon. One hundred fifty-two students participated in these events The student body was dismised from class at 12:30 in order to observe the happenings. A shower marred the runn i ng events and drenched the teach ers, but when the clouds dis appeared, students ea gerl y came back to finish. Ribboxs for the first five places were awarded at the end of the day. Carol Young and Donald Hens ley were voted as the most outstanding participants. The following is a list of the events and the order in which the students finished: GIRLS: LONG JUMP-Ist, Wanda Boone; 2nd, Carol Young;3rd, Marcia Banks; 4th, Kathy Griffin; sth, Sharon Laws. SOFTBALL THROW- Banks; 2nd, Bajhara Jones;3rd, High School Equivalency Questions, Answers 1. What is the High School Equivalency Program? It is a program whereby an adult who did not complete his high school education may take a series of tests to demon strate his general education a 1 competence and be awarded a certificate recognized and ge nerally accepted as equivalent to a high school diploma. 2. Who-issues the Equiva lency Certificate? The equivalency certificate is issued by the N.C. State Board of Education and mailed directly to the recipient. 3. What is the value of a high school equivalency certi ficate? The certificate is recogni zed almost without exception by industry, agencies of the government, employers, col - leges and other organizat ion s Honors Day At Mars Hill Medals, prizes and scholar ships were given to a number of faculty and students at Mars Hill College last week during an honors day program. Stu - dents honored were winners of ten awards, medals and prizes, the 71 scholarships winners and the 16 college marsh als who were formally installed. Twenty seven students from Western North Carolina were honored. Among them was Johnny Renfro, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Renfro of Burnsville. The certificate means that the hold er has achieved a level of ge neral educational development comparable to that of high school graduates. 4. Who is eligible to ap ply for the certificate? Any person who is not a high school graduate may ap ply for the certificate and take the tests if: (1) he is 19 years of age or older; however, an applicant 18 years of age may apply for the tests provided he has been out of regular high school program for at least six months; (2) he is a resident of the state. 5. How much formal edu cation (schooling) is required for an applicant to take the tests?. None, However, the more schooling an individual bas bad and the more educational ex periences he has had, the bet ter he will likely score on the tests. Persons who need a re fresher course may enroll in an Adult Basic Education Class (call the .W. A. M. Y. ) Office for schedule). Classes are sponsored in connection with Asheville-Buncombe Techni - cal Institute. 6. Where are the tests ta - ken? The tests are administered in authorized testing centers located at many community colleges a’-d technical institu tes.
