LEDUkrt twArtuti au, it uz Letter To The Editor Dear Editor: We have had children in the Yancey County school sys tem for the past thirteen years, and have been waiting (not very patiently, sometimes) for something to be done to update our physical facilities and improve teacher-selec - tion methods. The only real Improvement I have seen (other than regular mainten - ance) in buildings is that done at Burnsville Elementary last year. The FT A there, under Mr. Hess' chairmanship, kept insisting to all involved state agencies that something must be done until the board of education was forced to com ply. I understand that in the last year Cane River High has made several improvements in administration and imple mentation of programs which is to be commended by all the county. We do have some excell ent teachers and principals in our schools, as well as sever al average ones, but there have been a few years when I felt at least one of my child rens' full year was wasted, ft seems a pity that many good teachers were not able to get or keep a job unless he or she was affiliated with and sup ported the "correct" politi - cal party. I have been a registered Democrat since I became of voting age, but I do not believe politics should be considered in any way where our schools are c o n cerned. I have always tried to vote for the man or woman rather than the party. I would like to urge all parents and other interested citizens who want a well rounded academic and athle tic program to vote in the upcoming primaries for men with sound education and vo cational or professional back ground* who are capable of making and carrying through decisions which will determine whether our children keep up with those in other counties, drop out of school, or keep marking time until they can leave Yancey County. Also> I would like to ask all the young men and women who are recent graduates of Cane River and East Yancey to make sure they are registered and eligible to vote in the primaries and elections. I know most of them have strog feelings of loyalty to their own school, but, at the same time, they mwt realize that in order to have a high school of the caliber of those in sur rounding counties something must be done SOON toward starting a consolidated high school here. I have known several of the candidates for the Board of Education for quite a few years and know them to be capable, intelligent, well educated men. Others, in both parties, lam sure have some or all of these qualifi - cations who are running in the primaries. I hope we can all let our judgement and conscience be our guides in choosing the best men avail - able for our next school board.
