Garland, Treasurer and Tax Collector for Mitchell County has the highest per- ft| : sf| CtMlta S° ot taxes collected in thirty- (30) years--approximately ninety-three percent. We H: ill icel sure this has been accomplished by hard work and courtesy to the tax payers" (end of ftf ||g quote). ft Ipj I iiave been Tax Collector for more than nine years. My record is open to the public -ft[ HI both in the Tax Office and County Accountant's Office. ft The small number of delinquent taxpayers referred to by Mr. Tally are mostly per*- If ft sonal taxes. ft Over the years since I have been in this office, I have learned that by using a little kindness and understanding toward the people you can accomplish more in this bisiness of ft[ Ml collecting taxes. After all, they are the ones who pay in the money that Mitchell County ftf I spends and furthermore, they are human beings like you and I and should be treated as such. I At no time in the more than nine years that I have been in this office have I favored K any special group of taxpayers. I consider them all honest, hard working people and my ft ft friends. I have always fried to make it as convenient as possible to pay their taxes by being ft in Spruce Pine and other places as well as the regular office in Bakeisville, and I deplore jft I inference in the Tally sheet that this has not been done by my office. ft: I want it thoroughly understood that as long as I am Tax Collector of Mitchell Count ty 1 shall give the poor people and otherwise a chance to pay their delinquent taxes in a j§ way that will not bring about too much hardship on their family and cause their children ft fifj to suffer for lack of necessities of life. ft II Sometimes this is done by partial or installment payments at different times on their ft ■ back taxes. ft After all it is better to get small amounts at different intervals than not to get any II I ft My record of ninety-three percent tax collection while in office goes to prove that I my methods could not be all wrong in the way I worked with the taxpayers. ft ■m. f I suggest that the author of the Tally Sheet, while traveling Talley's alley, to do a 1 little research on the Tax Collector and Treasurer's Office. , He might also check with the election officials and find that the Clerk of Court is rot K H up for election until 1974. ft Also he may learn that there are around 7,000 taxpayers in Mitchell County, and only ft. about seven percent of the 7,000 taxpayers are delinquent with their payments. ft ‘ I feel quite sure that the people of Mitchell County very well know what kind of a ft Tax Collector 1 have been. After all the taxpayers are intelligent individuals and vote as ft I such in all elections. ft He might also check the March 24th issue of the Asheville Citizen article stating that Kx- Mitchell County Tax Collections for 1971 - 1972 were up almost twelve percent amount ft : collected. The amount collected was $525,580, up 11.7%, (end of quote). ft I personally invite each and every taxpayer in Mitchell County that has a complaint ft or tax problem to come to my office and I will help in every way possible.
