I thought I met my deductible earlier when I had some doctor bills. Now I'm really confused. Can you tell me why I had to pay the deduc tible twice? A. You didn't pay the de - ductible under each of the two parts of Medicare--for the hos pital part the deductible is SSO a year. You had met the hos pital insurance deductible when you went into the hospital. Q. I know I'll get an increase in my monthly social security payments, starting with the check delivered in October. But what happens if the cost of liv ing goes up in the future? So cial security is my only income, I A. A total of 75 students from Mitchell, Yancey and Av ery Counties were enrolled in four curriculums. Classes are being held in the Ellis Building,- Baker Building and old Presbyterian Church Building in Spruce Pine and on the Lees Mcßae College cam pus and Cannon Memorial Hos pital in Banner Elk. An orientation was held on Wednesday morning, September 6in the sanctuary of the Cen If the cost of living goes up 3 percent or more in one year, monthly social security payments will also go up starting the fol lowing January—unless a gener al benefit increase was enacted or became effective during the prior year. Cost of living in creases will be measured by the Consumer Price Index put out by the U. S. Dept, of Labor. Q. I hear that monthly so cial security benefits will be increased. I got the last raise automatically. Must Ido any thing to get this one? A. You don't have to do any thing to geUthe new 20 percent increase. You'll see the increase for the first time in the social security check you get in early October. Q. My son was killed in Vietnam. Mr.W3. (Bill) Wilkins, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of* Mayland Technical Institute, welcomed the students and gave a brief history of the institution. Dr. Blake, President, gave an orien tation address and reminded the students that achievement in cludes opportunity,aptitude, and most important of all, a desire or the motivation to achieve. Mrs. Flora Belle Roberson, Stu dent Personnel Director, acted as Master of Ceremonies and talked with the students about school, policy, grades,parking, etc. of all additional expenses such as flowers, telephone calls,etc. Take the record to your nearest Social Security Office. Some, if not all of these additional ex penses can probably be reim - bused. Q. My husband became dis abled last month. The doctor told him that he will not be able to return to work within the next twelve months. Is there some type of program set up by social security to pay disabled persons? A. Yes. Social Security does have a disability program. In order to become eligible for these benefits,however, the law states that a peison's disability must be expected to last for at least 12 months or result in death.
