A new academic vice president and dean of the college, Dr. William Stolte, has recently been elected. I>. Stolte, 36, taught economics at Berea after receiving the PhD degree at Sy racuse University. He has also been an administrator and pro fessor at Concord College in West Virginia. He is already actively en - gaged in finding new ways to serve Berea's students and the region from which they come. He says, "For over ten years I have been aware of the signifi cant role Berea College has played in providing a unique educational opportunity for stu dents from the Southern Appala chian region. Much of toy pre vious knowledge about Berea came from the acquaintance I had with graduates who were actively engaged in service, both within Appalachia and throughout other parts of the Ufaited States and the world. Dean Stolte believes there are few substitutes for a moder ate size residential college with a strong faculty and a strong sense of the worth of the indivi dual. Berea offers not only these values, but is tuition free and has aunique labor program which adds educational dimen sions and offers qualified stu dents away to earn money to pay additional fees, room and board, and other expenses.
