Jerry Mc- Kinney, pastor of the New Mar ket Baptist Church, New Mar ket, Tennessee will bring the messages. For the Saturday avening ser vice Rev. McKinney willbring with him from his church a very fine male quartet, along with the music director of the New Market Baptist Church. Special music will be given each even ing during the revival. Rev. McKinney, a native of Yancey County and graduate of East Yancey High School, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul McKinney, members of the Newdale Presbyterian Church. He is married to the daughter of Rev. As tor Buchanan, a well known Baptist minister of this area. They are tile parents of two children. After a short business career, during which time he was active as a lay leader, he felt the call to full time service and accepted a call to the New Market Church. He has had extensive training in the field of theology, and during the Billy Graham Cru sade in Raleigh attended the Billy Graham EvangelicalTmin ing School held there. Rev. McKinney is a gifted* 7 speaker, has a very winning personality and is especially popular with young people. The public is cordially ii viteato attend these revival services. Rev. Purpose of the Community Development Program, which , is open to any organized com munity in the western .counties, is to encourage people to work together to buiia better com munities in which to live. For many years it has operated with a slogan "There is no li mit to what a community can do—if it wants to. " Aim of the youth program is to encour ag% participation of young peo ple |p community organizations and dptivities, development of leadership to promote adult leadenfcip and support of youth and recreation programs. Apple pie seems to be a favor ite dessert, and every family probably has their favorite re cipe. Apples are plentiful now and can be used in so many ways. We cau have them every day and never tire of them. We have selected some re cipes you may enjoy that may differ from your old standbys. FRESH APPLE KUCHEN 2 cups unsifted all-purpose flour 3/ 4 cup sugar 1/2 tsp.salt 1/4 tsp. baking powder 1/2 cup butter or margarine 1 lb. cooking apples 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 tsp. nutmeg 2 egg yolks . 1 cup heavy cream i I I I '-.ISPBfcV Pf§ *I 1 fw ■ ML EY Player Os The Year Barry Johnson, offensive half-back for East Yancey High School, was presented with the East Yancey "Player of the Year" award for this season on Friday night, October 26. The award, sponsored by French Broad ElectriciMembership Corporation, was presented to Barry by Mr. I. E. Clevenger. It is based on individual effort, consistancy, and dedication throughout the season. Congratulations to Barry "B. J. " John son on winning this award. ie 1. In medium bowl, com bine flour, 2 tblsp, sugar, the salt and baking powder. With pastry blender, cut in butter until m ixture resembles coarse crumbs. 2. Turn into 9-inch round layer-cake pan; pat firmly against bottom and side of pan, 3. Preheat oven to 400° F. 4. Wash, pare, and core apples. Cut into 1/2 inch thick wedges; arrange in pastry lined pan. 5. Combine remaining su gar with cinnamon and nutmeg; sprinkle over apples. 6. Bake 15 minutes. Beat * egg yelks with cream; pour over apples. Bake 30 min. loig er or until top is golden brown. 7. Place pan on wire rack; let stand 10 minutes. Serve warm. Makes 6 to 8 servings. APPLE PANCAKES 1 cup pancake mix 1/2 tsp. cinnamon dash nutmeg G cloves 1 egg 1 tblsp. cooking oil 1 cup milk 1/2 cup chopped apples Mix and bake on ungreased griddle. (Syrup) 1 cup maple flavor syrup; 2 tblsp, butter; 1/4 cup chopped nuts. Heat. (do not boil) Serve over pan cakes. APPLE COFFEE CAKE 3/4 cup enriched yellow com meal 3/4 cup sifted all -purpose flour 3/4 cup sugar 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp, salt 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 2 tblsp. butter or margarine 3/4 cup milk 1 egg 11/2 cups peeled chopped apples TOPPING m 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar 2 tblsp. all-purpose flour 1 tsp. cinnamon 2 tblsp. butter or margarine For coffee cake, mix and I sift com meal, flour, sugar, / baking powder, salt and cinna- J mon. Cut in butter until mix- ‘ ture resembles coarse crumbs. * Add milk, egg and apples. Stir ; until thoroughly blended. Bake ; in greased 8-inch square bak ing pan at 3SO degrees about ; 30 min. While coffee cake is baking, prepare topping* com bine brown sugar flour and cin namonl Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle on top of coffee cake. Bake an addition al 10 min. Serve warm, cut in squares.
