Lauderdale, Florida are spending a few days in their summer cottage on Academy Street. Dr. Brooks is pastor of Christ Methodist Church in Ft. Lauderdale. * Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Hensley were on a business trip to Charlotte over the weekend. * Chuck Aldridge, an ASU student at Boone, N.C., spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Al dridge. * Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Allen of Ocala, Florida have been visiting Mrs. Allen’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Smith on Philips Knob for the past month. * Mrs. Troy Ray and Mrs. Neva Renaldo returned home after a weeks visit with Mrs. Ray’s daughter, Mrs. Roger Estep and family of Williams burg, Va. Mrs. Mary An drews who has been the guest of Mrs. Annie Bennett re turned with them to her home there. * Mr. and Mrs. Berge Neil of Greensboro, N.C. attended the funeral of Mr. Neil’s sister-in-law, Mrs. Ralph Neil of Bald Creek last week. * Mrs. Ronnie Huskins un derwent surgery in Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, last week. * Mrs. Grace Shotts of Asheville visited Mr. and Mrs. John Martin last week. * Mr. and Mrs. John Wilson spent last week with their son, Frank, and family of Hamlet, North Carolina. * Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Riddle, Jr. visited their daughter and family Larry Fox of Newport News, Va. * Cy Jordan, Realtor and Associates had a Pot Luck Fox Is Junior Queen Miss Raylene Fox, eleven year old (laughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Fox of Route 3, Burnsville, has been notified that she has been chosen the 1974-75 Junior Queen of the North American Festival of Champions. She was chosen from 150 girls from several states on talent, beauty, stage appeal and personality. Raylene will perform on the same billing with the famed Carter and Clark families. The crowning of the junior and senior queens will take place on October 20 at Asheville Civic Center. Ray lene will be singing “Country Roads”, “On Top of the World”, and “Red Wing”. Accompanying Raylene will be Bobby and Ramona Angel, the son and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Angel of Burnsville. They attend Cane River High School. The Festival is produced and directed by Mr. Dennis F. Abe of College Park, Md. Good Roads On MOONSHINE MTN picnic at the George Downing cabin at Cattail Creek on Sunday afternoon. * Paddy Downing and friend Sharon Wentworth made a surprise visit of a few hours to see her family, Capt. and Mrs. G.A. MsrL Raylene Fox 4-H Club Discusses Wildlife BY SHARON YUZIUK Club Reporter Twenty-four members of the new Burnsville 4-H Club met in the library at Burns ville Elementary School on Monday, October 14. 4-H Leaders Johnny Hensley and Bobby Bennett presided at the meeting. Colored slides on wildlife and nature were shown and a discussion was held after wards. The Burnsville 4-H’ers are planning a Car Wash for the near future and everyone is urged to keep Their cars nice and dirty so the club members can earn some money by washing them. Pharmacist Speaks At East Yancey Doctor Steve Moore from the School of Pharmacy, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, N.C., visited Mrs. Zuver’s Social Studies classes and talked on “Values In American Society.” The students participated in dis cussions with Doctor Moore. Pam is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Max McCurry, and Danny is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Canipe. First runner-up was Kim berly Peterson, escorted by Randy Silvers. Second runner -up was Chris Silvers, escor ted by Suel Anglin. Third runner-up was Chris Hughes, escorted by Bobby Holcombe and Fourth runner-up was Lora Peterson, escorted by Tommy Hensley. Dorothy Smith w “The Town Musicians”, a film for children adapted from the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, was shown to 36 “little people” this past Monday at the CHILDREN’S HOUR programs held in the Yancey County Public Li brary. Following this film, the children participated in a craft project. The CHILDREN’S HOUR concluded with the fable by La Fontaine, “The Rich Man and the Shoemaker, illustrated by Brian Wild smith. DECA VISITS HENDERSONVILLE On October 1, some members from East Yancey and Cane River High DECA Chapters went to Henderson ville to plan our D.L.C. to be held on November 6. The students who went were Venita Silvers and Tony Eubanks from East Yancey and Judy Arrowood and Regina Edwards from Cane River, along with Mr. Harold Bennett, sponsor of East Yancey and Cane River DECA chapters. MASTERS SPEAKS TO H. O. CLASS Keith Masters, a li censed sanitarian for the Yancey County Department of Sanitation, spoke to the Health Occupations II class on Wednesday, October 9. He spoke about the many duties of the Sanitation Department, such as water purification, the prevention of erosion, and the installation of septic tanks throughout the county. Vi cup shredded American cheese Combine beef and bread crumbs, eggs, */« cup tomato sauce, salt, chili powder and cayenne. Press into a 9 inch pie pan; bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Top with the thawed mixed vegetables; add remainder of tomato sauce and continue baking for 30 minutes. Sprinkle shred ded cheese over top and bake until cheese melts. (4 to 6 servings.) ORANGE SALAD 1 small whip topping 1 small cottage cheese 1 small pkg. orange jello (dry) 1 small can mandarin oranges (drained) Mix jello, cottage cheese and oranges, then fold in whip topping and chill for two hours. King, 91, of the Elk Shoal Community died Monday afternoon in Yancey Hospital after a long illness. He was a Yancey County native and a retired fanner. Surviving are two daugh ters, Mrs. Bob Clouse of Erwin, Tenn., Mrs. Lillie Silver of Asheville; one son, Troy King of Burnsville; three sisters, Mrs. Lucy Mclntosh and Mrs. Bill Shepherd of Burnsville and Mrs. Minnie Pate of Marion, N.C.; two brothers, Alex and Charlie King, Burnsville; 20 grand children and 27 great grand children. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Elk Shoal Union Church of which he was a member. Revs. Niram Phillips and Grady Shepherd officiated and burial was in the King family cemetery. MRS. A. K. WILSON Mrs. Jessie Alley Wilson, 82, of Rocky Springs Heights, Burnsville, formerly of Ashe ville, died Thursday, October 10 in a Henderson County hospital following a period of declining health. Mrs. Wilson had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Robert L. Rhinehart, since the death of her husband, Augus tus (Gus) K. Wilson, in 1964. She was a member of the Burnsville First Presbyterian Church. Surviving besides the daughter is a son. A.K. Wilson of Jackson, Mississip pi; two gransons; a brother, Ross V. Alley of Hickory; two sisters, Mrs. W. R. Harris of Troutman and Mrs. Annie Summers of Statesville. Graveside services were held Saturday in Lewis ■* ' ** v/SSNm*. - WT* Eddie King Cane River Player Os The Week Eddie King was selected by the Cane River Rebel football players as the “Play er of the Week” for his outstanding plays in the game against Harris High last Week. Eddie played quarterback for the first time and did an outstanding job. He also did an excellent job on defense. Congratulations, Eddie! 1 qt. vanilla ice cream Mix gelatin with boiling water; cool slightly. Mash bananas and sprinkle lemon juice over them. Stir bananas and ice cream into the gelatin and stir until ice cream is melted. Pour into individual molds, serving dishes, or a large (2 qt.) mold. Chill until set. Yield 12 servings. CHOCOLATE COCONUT DROPS Vi cup sweetened condensed milk 1 square (1 oz) unsweetened chocolate 1/8 tsp. salt IVi cup shredded coconut Vt tsp. vanilla Put milk, chocolate and salt in top of double boiler. Cook over rapidly boiling water, stirring often until thick (10 min). Remove from heat and stir in coconut and vanilla. Drop by teaspoonfuls on well greased baking sheet (1 inch apart). Bake 350 degrees 10-12 min. Remove from pan at oncel Memorial Park, Asheville. The Rev. J. Edward Bates, pastor of Kenilworth Presby terian Church, Asheville, conducted the service. Wil liams Funeral Service, Ashe ville, was in charge. MRS. LILLIE ROBINSON Mrs. Lillie T. Robinson, 70, of the Double Island Section of Yancey County died unexpectedly at her home Thursday night. She was the wife of the late Sam Robinson who died in 1953. Surviving are three daugh ters, Mrs. Virgis Anglin of Burnsville, Mrs. Dock Woody of Spruce Pine (Hand Mrs. Jim Farris of Rosedale, Va.; nine sons, Brown and Wyman Robinson of Burnsville, Har old, D.A., and Ira Robinson of Green Mountain, James C. Robinson of Detroit, Michi gan, Dewey Robinson of Wilmington, N.C., Dorian Robinson of Virginia and Lloyd Robinson of Chicopie, Mass.; one sister, Mrs. Clarence Young of Bakers ville; three brothers, Jobe A. Thomas of Michigan, Preston Thomas of Michigan and Isaac Thomas of Green Mountain; twenty six grand children and thirteen great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Double Island Baptist Church of which she was a member. Rev. Arthur Woody, Rev. Richard Buchanan and Rev.
