Reece, State Executive Director for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. The samples will be taken at tobacco warehouses. Before being issued to bacco marketing cards, pro ducers must certify whether or not DDT, TDE, toxaphene or endrin were used. Reece reminded growers that it is a violation of law to make false certification regarding these pesticides. Tobacco market ing cards are issued by the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS). Since tobacco is mixed in the redrying and packing process, use of any of these pesticides by even a few producers can affect tobacco from many farms. Reece said that finding DDT, TDE. toxaphene or endrin residue could result in loss of important markets. Several major buyers halve indicated concern about the level of Undesirable pesticides in their purchases, according to no tices Reece has received from ASCS headquarters at the U.S. Department of Agricul ture in Washington, D.C. “It is very much to the beneficial interest of every tobacco grower in North Carolina to use only accep table pesticides,” Reece said. He expressed hope that the chemical analyses of tobacco samples from local ware houses would show no residue from the pesticides. And be cause the mica industry is a unique one, no experts are likely to be created, which means the companies are forced to work by trial and error-an expensive process. Deneen is in the process of installing an air scrubber which, hopefully, will take 99.4% of air pollutants (mica particles) out of the air, or exhaust, that is released after drying the mica. “We expect the scrubber to work, said Wilkins, but as with all such things, we’ll know better when we use it. This is the third change to be made at Deneen to cope with air problems. The water pollution prob lem has been taken care of for some time, as Deneen uses no chemicals in its flotation process that are harmful to water or to marine life. The method used is simply to change the Ph, or specific gravity, of the water which float Th» 'i'" - ' '*■ *■ 4j slo r ' -SSL* - , * •' . ' r ?■ ■ * mL' • • * AFTER ....
