Horticulture Scholarships Encourage Studies A $500.00 college scholar ship and a $250.00 scholar ship to an area technical institute or the two-year agricultural institute at N.C. State University have been announced by Harry Silver of Asheville, chairman of the horticultural crops commis sion of the Western North Carolina Development Asso ciation. =*= The group has awarded college scholarships for a number of years to encourage youth of the area to enter the professional field of horticul ture. This is only the second year a scholarship has been provided to a student entering a technical institute or com munity college in the 18 western counties with an approved horticultural curri culum or the two-year pro gram at N.C. State. Recipient of the college scholarship will be an enter ing freshman and must pursue the four-year course leading to a degree in horticulture in a college or university with an approved curriculum. Donor , of the SSOO college scholarship are Asheville Flo ral Company and Maier’s Greenhouses, both of Ashe ville and other WNC nursery and greenhouse operators. Van Wingerdens, Inc. of Mills River is sponsor of the $250.00 scholarship for the two-year program. Information and applica tions are available from high school guidance counselors, vocational agriculture teach ers and 4-H Club agents. Deadline for applying is May 1, 1977. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of need, interest, scholastic record, leadership and citizenship. Winners will be announced by May 15. High school graduates of the 18 counties which com pose the WNC Development Association area are eligible. These are Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Cherokee, Clay, Gra ham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, McDowell, Madison, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transyl vania and Yancey. Courses Scheduled » By Mayland Tech The Continuing Education Department of Mayland Tech is sponsoring a special course in Gourmet Trout Cooking. The course, which will feature local residents Delores and Chris Troxell as instructors, will include “hands-on” ses sions in preparing trout for human consumption. The Troxells are well known for their trout farm located near Burnsville, are considered professionals in trout growing and its prepara tion for catering to both large and small grouos. Their specialties include canned and pickled trout; however, they are particularly well known in these parts for a hickory smoke techniques, the aroma of which makes one's mouth water. The class will include five sessions of three hours each at East Yancey Middle School Preregistration will be held at EYMS on Monday, April 11, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. For further information contact Wayne Phillips at MTl’s Yancey County Learn ing Center 682-7315. Charlie says he caught it with spinning equipment and live bait. After struggling with this “big one” for nearly 10 minutes, he says he finally got it on the rocks. Wrnm w nl Tamara Austin Celebrates Tamara Lae Austin, the (ll([[ daughter of Mr. and Mrs. VLIIU LI / 3 Bobby Lee Austin of Route 3, '' Mayland Technical Insti tute and the Toe River Arts Council will jointly sponsor a class in Stained Glass Work. Wanda Levin will be teaching the Stained Glass class beginning April 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Newdale Community Center. The clas ses will meet each Wednes day evening for seven weeks from 7-10 p.m. The registration fee will be $5.00. Each student will pay an additional fee for materials, and a minimal fee for heat and light. The maximum student for this class will be 15. Wanda’s class will be taught the copper foil method of making stained glass windows and decorative items. With this method, the ’ pieces of glass are held together with solder rather than with lead. Students are encouraged to bring scrap glass, house hold glass cutters, and solder ing irons if they have them. Beginners are encouraged to come!
