ANDREWS LUCY laughter STAFF CORRESPONDENT f Fireman Receives Safety Award ?ANDREWS - Maurice Piercy, 42, a Southern Railway locomotive fireman, who spotted a rock slide inside a tunnel and prevented a serious freight train derailment, was honored U Raleigh on Thursday, April 18, with his union's international safety award. The plaque ijtcelved by Mr. Piercy is shown above. He was credited with preventing the derailment of his 16 car freight train when he spotted a rdfck slide in the Co wee Tunnel near Dills bo ro, on the Asheville Division of the Southern Railway. The incident occurred on J anuary 30. y Governor Terry Sanford presented Piercy a plaque and a monetary award of $250 was given by Ay M. Lampley, a union official of Washington, D. Andrew* Native Injured In Wreck ANDREWS - James Kay Stover, 39, of East Flat Rock and a native of Andrews, was injured on Thursday afternoon returning from work In a five car crash, near Henderson vllle, sending five to the hospital. Patrolman Dan Frady who investigated the accident said a car driven by Mrs. Shady Fowler was traveling north on N. C. 191 when she pulled from her lane of traffic Into the left hand lane, side - swiped two oncoming ve hicles and collided solidly with the next five cars. In the third car struck by the Fow ler auto, was Stover who re ceived broken right leg and ankle plus severe cuts and bruises. He was admitted to Margaret Pardee Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Donna Sue Puller and Edwin Barlow, have been selectsd to atsaod The Governor's School in Winston-Salem this summer. Bo* students were chosen in (he field of vocal music. The Governor's School of North Carolina is a summer program for gifted high school students, which is mads pos sible by a grant from theCar negle Foundation of New York and other grants from business and fowdadon leaders in Winston - Salem. The school will be bald at Salem College in Winston-Salem, and there is no expense to the student other then the cost of trans portation id and from the college. Both students went to Lenoir Rbyne College in Hickory last week for auditions. Being chosen for the school is an honor in that so few students from Western North Carolina are listed in the final selection. In all areas of instruction three students are from Ashevllle, two from Canton, two from Henderson ville, one from Brevard, one from Jackson County, and two from Andrews. She will be 83 years of age June 24. She was born in Cherokee County, and has lived In Andrews her lifetime. She is a great quilt-maker and Is kept busy making them for members of her family. She recently completed one for her great-grandchild. Michael Bates, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Bates of Atlanta. She enjoys reading her Bible dally and in her thoughtfulness of others, she has helped enrich the lives of all who know her. Mrs. Earwood has been a member of Andrews Firs' Baptist Church for 67 years. In the past month she has lost her brother. Rev. James Truett, and sister, Mrs. Joanna Holloway. but In her quiet way she has given strength to others by her faith and trust in God.
