Never Forget That These Editorials Are The Opinion Of One Man y— And He May Be Wrong Is World Order Possible? ror just over 10 years me unitea Nations experiment has been stumbling toward an answer t6 the question: Is World,Order Pos sible? Now with the apparent murder of UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold world .leaders are unavoidably suffering an “Agon ing re-appraisal” of the true worth of this admittedly noble effort. In every member-nation there has been an understandable reluctance to surrender national sovereignty to the UN. Even when the surrender of former national rights, is exchanged 'for tremendous benefits this re luctance has continued, No nation has been more tortured on this point than the United States. - ' T’"':,;y A hundred years ago, in the frontier era of our own national progress, every man was the protector of himself, his family and his prop erty. Then law enforcement agencies were born, and expanded and our, grandfathers hung their rifles and pistols up and left the majority part of maintaining law and order, to the law enforcement agencies. There were many who surrendered this individual sovereignty slowly; some in fact never. We still have people who take the law into their own hands when their lives, or property is threatened; and human nature being what it is the law accepts the right of the individual to self defense. In a society of nations this same principle is accepted, but there are major and complex differences between the protectiofl of indiv idual and- national life and property., Castro stole Cuba uisiana “legally”; apparatus' by act legal. r by the same r forefathers long stole controlled could make do aetenomg a nation Deconies tar more intricate a process than the simple defense of an individual. The UN has been tiding to solve this intricate problem; which invol ves not only politics, but economics and sociology as well. .I1;’;t Judged on the basis of 16 years, the UN has been far more successful in its effort than its predecessor, The League of Nations. But the success the UN has had so far is very largely due to the military, financial and poli tical backing it has been given by the United States. •’■■M £. Russia, the other major world power of the moment, has done all it possibly could to, wreck this effort to world order, because the UN is dedicated to a world in which free men have a free choice to their political system, while the Soviets are. dedicated to exactly the ppposite system. • But, at this moment with the emergence pf so many so-called nations in Africa the ab surdity of exactly equal representation in the UN is threatening to destroy the entire project. Soviet Russia and the United States each have one vote in the UN. So do such tribal fiefdoms as Mali, Ghana and such unstable masses as The Congo. ■ Either the constitution of the UN must be amended to eliminate tjiis weird stupidity, which is compounded further by the fact that the United States is now and has all along carried the mdjor part of the financial burd en of the UN, or the United States wtH with draw ultimately and that will mean the end of the UN. Whitt has a family of three: Hiniseff, his wife and a daughter. If he were working for wages, and having his income tax taken out in advance as all wage earners, he would on Jy have had to earn $32 per week to owe the amount of income tax he paid; $192.66. That is annual income of $1664 — gross income, too; not net income. We say, and have said repeatedly before that it is illegal for the government to take come, and the final opportunity .to tell the tax , form what ever kind of fact or fancy he may decide upon. 1 We know of large tobacco farmers'who have NEVER filed either a state or federal income tax return. Yet the government through its tobacco control program knows and has records on the income of every tobacco farmer in the nation. Let some small business hire an extra laborer, or let the housewife hire a part time maid and the tax man is whining and threatening jail, heavy fines and penalties, but people, living like oriental potentate’s can thumb their nose'at the government and wind up with a slap on the wrist. ' Everybody despises taxes, but the only intolerable tax is that which is inequitably levied, unfairly administered and indifferent ly enforced. ... ■> ■ .y , ' The federal and state income tax laws ful ly fit this description. * . But all the hogwash I have been exposed to on TV, in the four-color magazines and in other glaring forms of advertisement bring me to this unusual con tribution. This, a few kind words, and perhapB a slam or two at Colgate toothpaste which I have' used all my life, and still use in spite of all the claims by; the makers of Crest toothpaste and the help the makers of Crest have been given by the American Dental Society. . I was 44 years old on August 4th of this year. 1 have all my teeth except two impact ed wisdom teeth that crowded my Jaw bone too much, and one other lower front tooth that got knocked put in a teenaged fist fight. In spite of nevef having brushed my teeth with Crest, and never having taken a drink of water knowingly that had been adulterated with fltiorides, I only have "one Filling in my teeth and that came from biting into a piece of steel that was hidden in a sausage, whisht broke off one side of said tooth and caused me to need a filling on the side to take the place of that piece of tooth the steel chipped ■Off. " , \ AH this was done while I used nothing but Colgate' Toothpaste, plus eating a well balanced diet and not being able to abide the leftover taste of sweets in my mouth. I like sweets — all kinds — but after I haye eaten I cannot stand the lingering tastes and have to rinse my mouth out as quickly as L ean get to a source of water: . Crest Toothpaste may be the miracle it is called by its makers and the dentists un ion, but in advertising it so highly and so frequently I’m ifraid that a false sense of tooth security is being built up in the minds of many patents and nearly all children. I might also, insert parenthetically, that I have made less than a dozen visits to the dentist in my 44 years. Too much prOguing and too much brushing have destroyed more '• 'teeth than neglect ever did. I don’t advise anybody to neglect their teeth, because dirty teeth are about the most detracting thing a person can have. Colgate toothpaste has Kept my teeth clean, and,, along with the use of the small amount of commons sense I have, I have kept my teeth in-excellent condition. Colgate has also been guilty of some pret ty crummy advertising. You know; the “in-J visible shield,” that keeps your, breath kiss ing sweet all day long. That’s a damned lie.
