Purebred breeders, commercial hog growers, packer buyers, com mission company salesmen, feed company representatives, college swine specialists, county agents, farm managers, vocational agricul ture teachers,\FA ahd t-H club members, and even retailers should be interested in this' ptogram. The Hampshire breed - pioneered the Type Conference idea. They have held 23 annual smiuner con ferences plus about half that many winter events dike this , one. Today the' Type Conference idea is com mon amottg other breeds of hogs and also other classes of livestock. Producers ahd, breeders must have some general picture of the ideal kind of animal they are striving to produce. They, must also know all the points and traits that indicate meatiness and muscling in today’s, meat hog if they are to be able to select breeding animals to gain im provement. The commercial man needs to be able to recognize, this ideal market hog and certainly the hog buyer or salesmen must know this animal if he is to get him bought according to his value. To carry out this program this conference will feature, in addition to this type discussion activity, sev ' feral shows includingbred gilts, open gilts, boars, barrows, and pairs of pigs eligible for certification. Sponsors The Kinston Hampshire Con ference is sponsored by Hampshire Swine Registry of Peoria, 111., the national organization for recording, promoting and improving purebred Hampshire liogs. Co-operating with the registry is the North Carolina Hampshire Breeders Association, L. B. Out law, Kinston, president, and John Tart, Goldsboro, secretary; The North Carolina State University College of Agriculture Extension Service; North Carolina State De partment of Agriculture; The Kins ton Chamber of Commerce and oth er related agricultural organizations. The Program Sunday afternoon, January 14,1 :30 P.M. This is not an official part of the conference program. This is a preparation period. Animals will be weighed where necessary.. They will be numbered for identification when' displayed the next two days. Some of then* that are to be slaughtered wiU have to be tattooed. The offic* ial type committee will be working this afternoon preparing the classes that they .are to use the next day for the discussion activity. Monday, January 15 Registration of people attending wilt start at 7 o’clock this day. A souvenir will, be given those reg istering before 8 A. M. First event' of the day will be a/hoof-carcass barrow show'. AU entries in this class must have attained a certain weight for age to' be eligible to show. , A judge will select what is in mis opinion the most valuable 10 animals shown. Spectators can make their selections. These animals will th^n be slaughtered and carcass data and information obtained on them as a check on how well the live appraisals were made. Next event will be a display of pairs of pigs eligible for certified | litters. Everybody will get a chance to try their hand at judging wheth er each pair will make the require ments. These too will be Slaughter ed and reports made the next day. Then will come the actual type discussion. Seven, classes of animals will be used. A judging contest will in each division, i there will be a show i, open gilts, and anotb r barrows. That evening s will be a dinner banquet at The Conference Banquet will be held at 7 p. m. Monday night, Jan uary 15 in the .ballroom of Hotel Kinston. An entertaining program has been arranged. Chief speaker of. the evening will be Sam Bundy 'of Farmville. ' Tuesday, January 16 , The program will get underway on Tuesday with a show of Hamp shire boars and the naming of; a champion boar. Following this the results of the judging contest will be announced. This will be follow ed by presentation of the carcass information obtained on the hogs slaughtered but seen-alive the pre vious day. ' ... There will a) so be a presentation of the results1 of the pigs eligible for certification. Some special cuts Of pork froth these carcasses will be available to demonstrate some of the things that were pointed out in the live animals. , That afternoon starting at 1 there; will be a sale of Hampshire bred, gilts in the show plus the boars and open gilts’ also in the show. Lunch, will be served on the grounds each day. ... , ' People of Intercut The official type committee for this conference is composed of the fblowing: Bernard Ebbing, Live stock Service Department, Rath Packing Company, Waterloo, Iowa who will also judge all barrows at the conference, is the chairman of this Type Committee. Ebbing has judged all breeds of hogs at shows all across the country. He has judg ed all breeds of hogs at the Inter national Livestock Show in Chi cago for the past three years. Outlaw, head hog buy :er for Frosty Morn Meat’s, Inc., at Kins ton; Wilbert Meinhart, Hudson, Iowa, a< Hampshire breeder that has shown many champions in both the breeding and barrow show; John Barlow, Hampshire , Breeder of Smithfield, Va., A young man that this year grossed more money from 40 Hampshire sows that he did from 135 acres of peanuts; Glen Bjder, Syracuse, Indiania> another pure bred Hampshire breeder that has shown champions at manjf shows. The carcass evaluation work at this conference will be done by John Christian, meat specialist from Nbrth Carolina^ State University, and his twin brother, Jim Christian/ Swine extension and meats special ists' from the University of Georgia at Athens; J. W.
