From time to time we have pointed out the importance of the apple in the daily diet, as an aid in oral hygiene and its value in re • ducing upper respiratory infections. But have we really ever sethed the question: Wihat is an apple? An apple is what the small boys shinny up trees after — and once upon a time when one fell down on - an Englishman’s head, it led to Newton’s law of gravity and a new age in science. It tells teacher she’s favorite « and its blossoms tell poets, song writers and young lovers that spring has come. An apple is cider, sauce, butter, dumplings, pie pan dowdjt and 'about 90 calories. It gets bartered for, begged for and bobbed for. It is sliced, diced, canned, peeled and polished. It gets cooked and candied, but mostly just chawed and chomped on. It goes into bushel baskets, box es, paper bags, polyethylene bags, tray packs, school lunches, fruit stand racks and policeman’s pock ets. One a day keeps the doctor away and brings the little ones in from play. An apple is as old as Adam yet it’s always news when the “crop’s in.” (With a few variations, this was taken from a Great North ern railway advertisement.) The American Cyanamid Com pany in it’s publication “Cyana grams,” comes forth with this ra ther alarming bit of news concern ing lime depletion in soils east of the Rocky Mountains which, of course, includes us. “Available statistics of about 886,000,000 acres east of the Rocky Mountains on which 59 principal marketed crops are grown, show that due to leaching, crop removal, rainfall, and nitrogen applications, approximately 86,(100,000 tons of lime are removed annually. On the. other hand, only 20,000,000 tons of lime are applied in the entire U.S. and 5 per cent of this acreage is already too acid for efficient fert ilizer usage. It would take 300 mil lion tons of lime to gain full pro ductivity.” 1 As I have advised many times, have your soil tested to be sure of the lime requirements. Most of our vegetable, fruit and ornamental crops thrive best at a pH of about 6.5, except azaleas, camellias and blueberries. They like an acid soil of about 5.6. Although developed originally for a farmhouse, they make good sense wherever you live. Install a cabinet with mirror for the children. Place it beside the lavatory with its center 2 % or 3 feet from the floor. This will give the children a place to keep their own toilet articles. Later, when the youngsters are grown, you can use the cabinet to store shoe polish, brushes and other supplies. Install cabinets under the sink. Put a drawer at the bottom and add a hinged cover. The drawer makes a handy step-up for 'the children. The board which forms the toeplate provides the necessary support. Put in a floor-to-ceiling cabinet at the end of the tub — or where ver else you can find space. Plan shelves at least 18 inches deep. Make them adjustable to get the best use of storage space. Have plenty of towel rods. Al low 21 inches of rod space for each person. If you’re short of space, install rods on the bathroom door. Or, if there is no shower, you can put them over the tub. Crab bars by the tub or shower help prevent falls. Make sure bars are firmly anchored. For a shower, place a vertical bar about 18 inches from the shower end of the tub. The center of a horizontal bar for tub-users should be placed about a third of the length of the tub from the faucets. Hooks for attaching a clothes line can be placed at each end of the tub.
