We have utilized space in our last two columns to-bring to your attention the award wiiir ning All-American flower and vegetable varieties for 1971. While we are about it, it might be well to review some of the previous winners for 1969 and 1970. Still popular are the 1969 award winning zinnias: Cherry Buttons, Rosy Future and Torch. Anoth er winner in 1969 is the dwarf white cornflower, Snow Ball. The 1970 winning flowers: marigold, Bolero; snap dragon, Madame Butterfly; Dianthus chinensis, China Doll; and morning glory, Early •Call Rose. All of these new £3 varieties are outstanding and you should try them along with the 1971 winners. In 1969 there were five awards given to new vegetable varieties in the cabbage family: broccoli, Green Comet; turnip, Tokyo Cross; cauliflower, Snow King; and two new cabbage varieties, Stonehead and Harvester Queen. Most every family enjoys fresh broccoli from the garden. The 1969 winner,'Green Comet, is the early hybrid which is very uniform and flavorful. It could well be the best early type variety yet developed for the home garden. Snow King cauliflower is early maturing, delicately flavored m ■t ONE HIGH STANDARD The same thoughtful consideration and complete dignified aeryice is accorded all regardless of the cbst of the funeral selected. A 3-2124 or JA 3-2125 Kinston, N C. Harvester Queen is another 'outstanding hybrid cabbage wfyich produces large heads and heavy main crop. This select tion is highly recommended for kraut. An extremely prolific orna mental is the beautiful and lus cious hybrid cherry tomato, Small Fry. A few plants of this 1970 winner will give a contin uous supply of large cluster one inch fruits until the plants are killed by frost. Small* Fry is fine for tidbits and fancy salad dishes. Waltham Butternut is an out standing late or winter squash. This 1970 winner is more pro ductive, fleshy and uniform than the previous butternut types. Thus Congress would be re quired to see that Federal pro grams were funded by current revenues or it would have to pass tax legislation to provide funds to pay for these programs over a 2-year period. The Fed eral Government would have to operate on a pajtas-you-go basis as is the practice in a majority; of the states. > N One may honestly ask why i)t is necessary to enact an Amendment to the Constitution to require Congress and the President to act as fiscally re sponsible individuals should, fhe truth of the ihatter is there is an overriding tendency among men in public office at the Wash ington level to conform their ac tions to what they believe to be the demands of the people. Unfortunately, however, the demands they hear are not or dinarily the demands from our soundest thinking people, or, in deed, the demands of a majority of our people, but ,on the con trary, are the demands of highly organized pressure groups seek ti money would, have greased the skids a little more, that’s all. And that would have been good or bad, depending on your point of view. mg money from the public treasury. Big spending in Wash ington has becdme a way of life, and deficit spending an inte gral part of it. Consider the fact that the na tional debt was $1.4 billion at the turn of the 20th Century, and only $55.3 in 1941. liven at the end of World War n, the national debt only reached a peak of $069.0 billion, and it was then expected to diminish ini' the post-war era. Actually, that hope never became a reali ty Since June 1946when the debt ceiling stood at $275 billion, Con gress has approved some 22 “temporary” and “permanent” debt limit increases. The latest increase came last summer when the “temporary” debt limit was raised to $395 biljion. The Fannin Amendment, which I hope Senator Fannin will re introduce at this session of the Congress, seems to me to be meritorious on two grounds: it would be a deterrent to- deficit spending and it would focus na tional attention on how we are financing the Federal Govera met. •aised letter, of finest engraving. r'&pH - v" < j , 605 N.
