“LAWLESS RIDERS” SAGA OF OLD WEST Dolly Madison Thfcatre, Saturday, September 19th. The law of the American fron tier was written with blazing guns! The range was a battleground for a new order of law and justice in a new world! Ken Maynard, King of Cowboys, brings another of his stirring dra matizations of the Old West to the Dolly Madison Theatre Saturday in Columbia’s “Lawless Riders.” Exciting thrills as Ken tracks down the masked plunders of the range! The plains flame with ac tion as Ken blasts his barrage of bullets against the lawless bands! “Lawless Riders” is the story of the adventurous men who brought justice to the West. The story and screen play were written by Nate Gatzert under the direction of Spencer Gordon Bennet. Members of the cast include Geneva Mitchell, Harry Woods and Wally Wales. NEW FILM HAS EXPERIMENT IN GIRL VALUES’ Hollywood’s Most Beautiful Girls Appear in New Screen Triumph. DOLLY MADISON THEATRE MONDAY-TUESDAY, SEPT. 21-22 An experiment in “girl values” for a straight dramatic production is seen in “Girls’ Dormitory,” Twentieth Century-Fox production opening Monday at the Dolly Madi son Theatre starring Simone Simon the brilliant French star, making her American debut with Herbert Marshall and Ruth Chatterton. Ordinarily this thing called “girl values’ is restricted to musical pro ductions, where it is shown in the form of fantastic dance routines featuring the feminine form. But Darryl Zanuck, believing the Values were the same, whether in musical or dramatic productions, engaged 100-odd girls none over 18 years of age —for the picture. The girls are in formation, as in musical productions, but this takes the form of marching to and from 1 class rooms, exercises and mass gymnastics in simple dresses of like cut, color and design. The effect, insofar as the tradi tional “girl values” is concerned, is the same as though these youngsters were> tap dancing in a revue. Under the direction of Irving Cummings, the 100 girls are an in tegral part of the drama. Indeed, the picture couldn’t do without them, yet apart from this they per form a second function of pleasing the eyes without the artificial aid of bare legs and intricate dancing. Constance Collier, J. Edward Bromberg, Dixie Dunbar, John Qualen and Shirley Deane are also featured in “Girls’ Dormitory.” o ONCE GARBO’S “MOTHER;” NOW ENACTS BARRYMORE’S Dolly Madison, Today and To morrow, September 17th and 18th After four years on the stage and in European films, the only woman who has ever played Garbo’s moth er is back in Hollywood. Miss Beau mont was Garbo’s mother in “The Torrent.” In her current picture she plays Lionel Barrymore’s mother for the second time, having been cast in the same relationship in “A Free Soul.” The cast of “The Devil Doll” includes Maureen O’- Sullivan, Frank Lawton, Henry B. Walthal, Grace Ford, Juanita Quig ley, Hepry Daniel, Arthur Horl and Robert Greig. o For Immediate Results Advertise in the Times PAINTING SERVICE! STILL HAVE TIME TO PLANT FALL VEGETABLES In middle September eastern North Carolina gardners still have time to plant fall vegetables, accord ing to Robert Schmidt, horticul turist at State College. Fall vegetables for the most part belong to the leafy group, and re quire rich soil or heavy fertiliza tion to promote rapid growth, he pointed out. Snap beans and carrots may be planted at this time. Betejts should have been planted two or three weeks ago, but they can still be planted on the chance that there may be a late season. Among crops which can withstand the early light frosts are cabbage, turnips, kale, mustard, broccoli, tendergreen, Chinese cabbage, col lards, radish, lettuce, spinach, and onions. Kale is one of the hardiest gar den crops and it may be sown in the coastal plain and the piedmont areas up to October 1. Seed for fall lettuce in eastern Carolina should be sown at once. The Big Boston variety is best for all conditions, but there are other good varieties, Schmidt stated. Spinach seed will not germinate in hot, dry weather. If the soil is very sour, lime must be applied to produce a good crop. Spinach may be sown broadcast or in rows and thinned out to one plant every three or four inches. Turnips are a good fall crop for both their greens and their roots. They make good food for people and feed for animals. They should be planted at once. Tendergreen, sometimes called mustard spinach, is a quick grow ing crop of mild flavor and excel lent quality. Chinese salad is an other mustard plant that is delici ous either as a salad or a cooked dish. MUCH HARM CAUSED BY FOOD FADS 1 Most food fads are based on ig norance rather than a knowledge of foods and the requirements of the Ifuman body. No well informed person would advocate the absurd diets recom mended by self-styled “doctors” and “professors” who have pet theories to give out or who wish to promote the sale of certain “health foods.” This is the opinion of Dr. Frank Sherwood, of the N. C. Agricultural Experiment Station, who urges people to use common sense in eat ing and to shun food fads as they would the plague. The public has become health conscious during the last decade, and people fall easy prey to quacks who talk glibly of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals, and vita mins, Dr. Sherwood stated. Since most of their claims are based on an element of truth that is obvious to the public, he continu ed, the popular tendency is to sup pose that every claim they make is also true. Every time the food faddist monkeys with the human diet, Dr. Sherwood declared, he does more harm than good. He would have people believe that white bread is poison, that proteins and carbohydrates should never be eaten at the same meal, that certain so-called “health foods” are essential to life, health, and happiness, the doctor continued. He added that he is not referring to reputable physicians of dietici ans who recommend diets for people who cannot eat some things or who are in need of special foods. But these recommendations are baaqd on the needs of the individu al, and are made by authorities who know what they are talking about. The faddist, on the other hand, us ually urges the same diet for all people. “Qualified authorities hesitate to MIDWAY AT NX FAIR TO BE KEPT CLEAN World’s Greatest Feature Acts Booked For Presentation Before Grandstand. Raleigh, Sept. 10—Non e but legi timate conessions will be allowed on the grounds of the North Caro lina State Fair, which will be held in Raleigh the Week of October 12, General Manager Norman Y. Cham bliss emphasized today. “We are going to take even more stringent measures to see that the midway is kept clean and that the .public is protated from “gyp” gambling artists,” declared Cham bliss. “Every concession will be scrutinized carefully before it is granted space in the fairgrounds. We welcome the cooperation of the public in helping us to keep the State Fair clean and wholesome. If visitors have just complaints, we want them to bring their complaints to us and we will see that any wrong will be righbqd.” In connection with his emphasis on a clean midway, Manager Cham bliss pointed out that Max Lin derman is returning to the State Fair for the fourth consecutive year with his “World of Mirth Shows,” consisting of a galaxy of wholesome shows and novelty rides. “I know Max Linderman has the confidence of every fair Secretary in the country, and I do not hesitate to commend him for his coopera tion in maintaining a midway free from dirt,” commented Chambliss. In addition to the midway attrac tions, the State Fair has booked some of the world’s greatest fea ture acts for presentation before the grandstand.
