During the last W7 of Mardi Gras festivities, February 21, Negroes meet the tug boat, Mehrutened a Royal Yacht, and delnonstrate their loyalty to their "monarch.” Religion’s Role In Modern World To Be Debated At Duke Conference Durham—What shall religion’s role be in the modern world? What about the church and the preacher as forces in the present crisis? These and other related questions are scheduled to be closely studied on March 20-21 at the Duke university centen nial symposium on modern re ligious problems. Leaders from many denomina tions and from both Europe and America are going to participate in the intensive two-day confer ence. Frankness and self-analysis are going to be stressed. Issues affecting the relation of church and state are going to be discussed by Charles E. Ra ven, of Cambridge university, canon of Ely, one of Britain’s noted divines. Bishop Ivan Lee Holt, of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, is slated for an analysis of religion today in the Southern states. Contemporary religious thought in Europe and America will be discussed by Prof. Emil Bruu ner, distinguished Swiss theolo- i gian, now visiting at Princeton university, and Prof. R. L. Cal houn, of Yale university. Dr. Charles C. Morrison, edit-' or of the Christian Century, and Dr. H. Paul Douglas, editor of Christendom, are on the pro gram to discuss the problem of Christian unity. Dr. George A. 1 Buttrick, of New York, president' of the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America; and Dr. Alan K. Harrill, State 4-H Club leader, has announced that the outstanding club member in North Carolina during 1939 will receive a four-year scholarship to State College as has been the case in past years. Also, the out standing club member in each county in the State will receive a scholarship to the State 4-H Short Course at State College in the summer of 1940. The awards are offered through A. G. The winners will be determin ed on the following basis: Club member’s record of production as shown by project record books, 50 points; participation of club member in club and community activities such as exhibits, judg ing contests, fairs and achieve ment day program, 15 points; leadership activities in club, com munity and other organizations, 20 points; club member’s own story of his 4-H experiences, 10 points; and club member’s high school record as shown by his principal’s report, 5 points.
